NCAA’s Betting Surveillance Tool Catches Two Mississippi State Football Players Wagering

The first player bet $50 on Super Bowl between the Seattle Seahawks and New England Patriots. He lost when Seattle won. He said it was his only sports bet and received rules education.

The second player made two bets on NBA All-Star events through Kalshi. He won $64 on the 3-point contest when Damian Lillard won. He lost another bet on whether a broadcaster would say certain words during the All-Star Game. Because he profited, he had to donate $66.47 to charity and complete rules education.

Both players said these were isolated incidents. Mississippi State confirmed that by reviewing their Kalshi account histories.

Kalshi in the Spotlight: Prediction Markets and NCAA Rules

Kalshi is a federally regulated prediction market, not a traditional sportsbook. It is regulated in Mississippi, which has not approved regular mobile sports betting through companies such as DraftKings or FanDuel.

But the platform’s regulated status did not protect the players from NCAA penalties. NCAA bylaw 10.3 bans sports wagering by athletes, staff and conference employees, no matter the platform or whether the wager is regulated in that state. A wager on a regulated platform can still violate college sports rules.

Other Mississippi State Violations Round Out a Busy Compliance Report

The betting cases were not the only violations Mississippi State reported in 2026. A football assistant coach co-signed an apartment lease for an international student-athlete who could not use a parent as a guarantor. The coach paid no rent or deposit, and the player agreed to cover the balance. The coach received rules education.

The men’s track and field program was also cited after coaches paid for two meals for a recruit’s girlfriend during an official visit. She was not listed on the visit paperwork. The meals cost $55.64. The recruit was ineligible until he repaid the money. Coaches received a one-week recruiting ban, and the SEC warned the program after its second similar violation in six months.

The cases show how regulated gambling can conflict with NCAA rules. Prediction markets such as Kalshi may not look like traditional sportsbooks, but sports wagers can still violate NCAA rules.
