Co-hosts Mexico start their World Cup adventure against South Africa in the tournament’s opener, hoping for a positive result. They should be able to achieve it, but I don’t expect it to be easy.

The burden of expectations usually makes opening games tight and nervy. This can be a problem against South Africa’s very physical team. Mexico should be prepared for a battle that could lead to some cards on both sides.

That’s why I’m looking at Edson Alvarez’s odds to get booked. The defensive midfielder is almost certainly going to start, and one of his main tasks is to stop dangerous counters almost at all costs. That often includes cynical fouls that lead to cards.

His stats on club and national level confirm this, as Alvarez has started five games for Mexico at previous World Cups, getting booked twice. More recently, the holding midfielder has been booked twice in four starts for Mexico since last summer.

Another reason this is one of the best player prop bets in the World Cup opening day is the referee. Brazil’s William Sampaio will be in charge of this game, and he’s averaging over 5 cards per game over the course of his career. That’s on the high side, so guys like Alvarez, who play on the edge, can’t expect mercy.

If you add the solid odds to the picture, it’s easy to see why betting on Alvarez to get booked is a nice value wager.

Tomáš Souček to Score a Header (+1000)

The second game of the opening day looks very hard to predict, as both Czechia and South Korea will be confident in their chances to win this match. It should be a tight game with limited opportunities for both teams, so there are multiple directions to pursue here.

Cards will be an option once again, but I prefer to back Tomáš Souček to score a header in this one. The midfielder is very dangerous from set pieces, consistently providing aerial threat for both Czechia and West Ham United.

Souček has scored 19 goals in 87 games for his country, with almost all of them coming from dead ball situations. Whether it’s corners or fouls around the box, the midfielder will be the primary target of crosses.

His size, aggression, and timing make him hard to contain, so I expect some chances to come his way. While this is obviously a longshot, +1000 for Souček to score with a header is just too juicy to ignore and of the best World Cup player props today.
