MLB Cy Young 2025 Odds for AL and NL: Skenes to Be Crowned?

The following NL Cy Young betting odds are courtesy of Bovada:

Tarik Skubal (-650) has established a comfortable lead in his quest for back-to-back Cy Young honors. The Tigers’ starter currently holds an 86.7% implied probability to win. While that doesn’t signify a lock, Skubal is in the clear, according to oddsmakers.

Boston Red Sox ace Garrett Crochet (+525) is still within striking distance but will need Skubal to trip over himself in the next few months.

Per the best MLB betting sites, Crochet has a 16% chance. I’m not going to count Crochet out just yet, as he’s been pitching well recently! That said, he doesn’t control his own destiny, with Skubal needing to fall hard.

Nathan Eovaldi (+1800) may be one of the frontrunners if he weren’t out of the lineup for a month. I played Eovaldi as one of my longshot MLB Cy Young picks before Opening Day, but the lost time on the mound will be his undoing despite the success. At +1500, Eovaldi has a puncher’s chance with a 6.3% probability.

Paul Skenes (-225)

Although Skenes hasn’t been perfect this season, the Pirates’ sophomore star is locked in after a couple of early speed bumps. It’s been a predictably horrible season for the Pirates, but Skenes continues to pitch like one of the best in baseball.

At only 23 years old, Skenes owns a 2.02 ERA and 0.92 WHIP through 23 starts and 138 innings. He’s coming off a rare misstep against the Rockies in his latest performance. Skenes found it tough to tame Coors Field, as he was tagged for four earned runs in five innings. It was the first time in three games Skenes allowed a run.

Prior to that performance, Skenes was on fire with no runs conceded in four of five outings. The sophomore LSU product should shake off the poor effort versus the Rockies and get right back on track in his upcoming assignments.

Skenes’ hot hand couldn’t be stopped in July. He recorded a 0.67 ERA and 0.90 WHIP across 27 frames. Look for him to heat up again following the iffy start at Coors Field, which can be difficult for any pitcher.

I backed Skenes pre-Opening Day at +230 odds. That was the best Cy Young winner pick on the board. Now, at -225, he may still be worth considering to wrap up the award in September.

Zack Wheeler (+195)

As is customary for Phillies’ ace Wheeler, he is near the top of the board for the Cy Young! Close, but no cigar is the story of Wheeler’s career when it comes to winning the Cy Young award.

Last year, he finished second in Cy Young voting behind Atlanta’s Chris Sale. Wheeler received four first-place votes, while Sale collected 26. He’s been close several times in his career, but has never been able to oust the top vote getter.

According to the 2025 NL Cy Young betting odds, that looks like it’s going to happen yet again this season. Wheeler has recorded a 2.64 ERA and 0.92 WHIP in 22 matchups in 2025.

On July 6, it really looked like Wheeler was going to catch Skenes. He had a 2.17 ERA after allowing one hit and run against the Reds. However, he’s yielded four earned runs in three of four starts since then. Wheeler had a window to reel in Skenes but allowed it to dissipate.

Still, I wouldn’t count Wheeler out of the race right now. After his recent struggles, however, I’d want a much better price than +195 to consider betting on Wheeler to win the NL Cy Young.

Cristopher Sanchez (+1200)

Wheeler’s teammate, Cristopher Sanchez, has jumped up into the NL Cy Young conversation recently. Perhaps one of the most underrated pitchers in baseball, Sanchez is riding a wave of huge momentum.

Overall, he boasts an ERA of 2.40 and a 1.07 WHIP through 22 performances and 138.2 innings. He’s brought his ERA down to 2.40 from 3.33 in late May.

Sanchez has been on a torrid pace since June after allowing one earned run or none in seven of his last eight outings. While Wheeler has fallen a bit flat, Sanchez has risen to the occasion and carried most of the weight in the Phillies’ rotation. Note that with a 5.7 WAR, Sanchez leads all pitchers in the Majors!

In 2024, Sanchez logged a career-best ERA of 3.32 through 31 appearances. He’s well on pace to smash that number and possibly win the NL Cy Young. I think he’s going to come shy, but I’d rather take a chance on Sanchez at this price than Wheeler at +195.

Skubal has his eyes set on back-to-back Cy Youngs in the American League after he ran away with the honor in 2024. The 28-year-old’s work on the mound this season would have everyone believing that Skubal is well on his way. Additionally, the AL Cy Young odds point to a win for the Tigers’ ace.

Skubal has had a few tough outings this season, though. The Dodgers got to him for four earned runs in five innings in the opener. He stabilized but has had a few trouble spots since June 24. Skubal has allowed four earned runs twice and three or more in three of seven performances.

However, with a 2.18 ERA and 0.83 WHIP through 22 matchups, he remains in the driver’s seat. Skubal has also struck out 181 batters to rank second in the American League. The Tigers’ ace has had one fewer start than Crochet, so you can put him ahead for all intents and purposes.

Additionally, Skubal’s 5.6 WAR is tops in the American League and just 0.1 behind Sanchez’s mark. Despite a few hiccups, Skubal remains the obvious frontrunner to win his second consecutive Cy Young and the first pitcher since Pedro Martinez to capture back-to-back awards!

Garrett Crochet (+525)

Crochet’s odds to win the AL Cy Young have been on a roller coaster throughout the season. His price has been as low as +350 and as high as +900 this season. In early August, Crochet is somewhere in the middle at +525.

If anyone is going to catch Skubal, Crochet appears like the only logical option. The 26-year-old from Ocean Springs, MS, enters with a 2.24 ERA and 1.07 WHIP in 23 matchups. He leads the Major Leagues in strikeouts with a remarkable 183 Ks.

Crochet has been one of the most consistent pitchers on the mound over the last month. The former member of the White Sox allowed two or fewer earned runs in five straight performances. Additionally, the big lefty conceded two or fewer in eight of nine performances since June 13.

Second, with a WAR of 4.6, only Skubal has a higher number in the American League. If Skubal hits the skids and falters down the stretch, Crochet will be right there to capitalize! At +525, there is a lot of value here to consider.

Nathan Eovaldi (+1500)

If you don’t think that Eovaldi should be punished for his injury and missing time, then the Texas Rangers’ standout is your best bet. Eovaldi has done everything asked of him and been the most dominant pitcher in the American League when he’s on the mound.

Eovaldi has been razor-sharp with a 1.38 ERA and 0.84 WHIP in 19 starts and 111 innings. He’s appeared in four fewer games than Crochet and three than Skubal. Is that enough to handicap Eovaldi enough that he shouldn’t be considered to win the Cy Young?

In my opinion, no, Eovaldi should have a solid claim for the Cy Young regardless. That being said, there are some metrics where he ranks too far behind the top two contenders. Eovalid’s 111 strikeouts pales in comparison to Skubal and Crochet.

Furthermore, Eovaldi is just ninth in WAR with a number of 4.3. While Eovaldi’s work this season can’t be ignored, there are too many things placing him well behind Crochet and Skubal. The Cy Young looks to be out of reach.
