EURO 2024 Group A Betting Odds

The Group A competition at EURO 2024 should be one of the most closely contested groups in the opening stage of the tournament. Germany is the clear front-runner, but there is a lot to be decided for the two qualification berths!

Group A Winner Odds

The following Euro 2024 odds to win Group A are courtesy of Bovada:

TEAMODDS
Germany-250
Switzerland+600
Hungary+650
Scotland+750

Germany (-250) is the odds-on favorite to emerge as the winner of EURO 2024’s Group A. As the host country of EURO 2024, the nation will have the support  of the crowd, but it doesn’t guarantee an easy road.

At -250, Germany has an implied chance of 71.4% to win Group A. Those are fairly convincing odds, but there are three quality squads that they’ll have to get through in June.

To Qualify From Group A Odds

TEAMODDS
Germany-2000
Switzerland-190
Hungary-155
Scotland-140

As the favorite to win, Germany (-2000) is overwhelmingly expected to qualify from Group A. At -2000, Germany has an implied probability to advance of 95.2%!

It would be an incredible collapse if they don’t finish at least 2nd in Group A. The prices for Switzerland (-190), Hungary (-155), and Scotland (-140) suggest that the race for the next spot is expected to be highly competitive.

Germany – Can The Hosts Rise To The Occasion?

German manager Julian Nagelsmann has a significant challenge on his hands after replacing Hansi Flick in September 2023.

Supporters in Germany have lofty expectations for the 36-year-old Nagelsmann. If he succeeds, the coach will instantly be a beloved figure in Germany.

Bayern Munich is reportedly interested in hiring Nagelsmann, so he can solidify his position as a highly sought-after manager this summer. It’s been an up-and-down effort so far in international competition, but his squad appears to be turning a corner.

Impact Players

Germany’s EURO 2024 roster isn’t perfect, but they are the most well-balanced squad in Group A. Most prominently, Germany could have a wall in the net with Marc-André ter Stegen.

The 31-year-old native of Mönchengladbach is regarded as one of the finest goalkeepers in Europe. If Germany isn’t at their best, ter Stegen has the talent to steal a game for the home country.

In any event, if Joshua Kimmich is in top form, the defense should hold up quite well. The ultra-talented defensive midfielder will pair well with Nico Schlotterbeck to give Germany stability at the back.

The X-factor for Germany has to be 20-year-old Florian Wirtz. The young Bayer Leverkusen attacking midfielder still has much to learn, but can be a top asset if he shows up in his best form. In 29 Bundesliga matches, Wirtz has scored 11 goals and recorded 10 assists1, playing a key role in his team’s maiden Bundesliga title.

Past Performances & Team Form

The German national squad has been a mixed bag in international competition over the last decade or so. However, they seem to be rounding out in top form at the right time. Following disappointing losses to Turkey and Austria, the Germans have looked the part in 2024.

In March, Germany ousted France, 2-0, and then dispatched the Netherlands a few days later, 2-1. If that same German team shows up, they will have an opportunity to win EURO 2024.

Germany’s Last Five Results:

  • Germany 2 – Mexico 2 (Oct. 17, 2023)
  • Turkey 3 – Germany 2 (Nov. 18, 2023)
  • Austria 2 – Germany 0 (Nov. 21, 2023)
  • Germany 2 – France 0 (March 23, 2024)
  • Germany 2 – Netherlands 1 (March 26, 2024)

Germany (+600) has the third-shortest odds to win EURO 2024. With only France and England ahead of them, they are expected to have a big tournament. Faltering in the group stage would be a major shock.

I have faith in Germany rising to the occasion here, but it will get much tougher after the group stage.

Switzerland – Will Consistency Pay Off?

Switzerland does not excel in any one area or rank among the top teams in FIFA. Currently, the Swiss rank 19th in the world, just three spots behind Germany2.

However, Switzerland is a consistent squad that is never enjoyable to play against. They grind on teams and wait to capitalize on mistakes.

Murat Yakin’s squad did not draw the worst group. Group A is far from the dreaded “Group of Death”, so Switzerland has an alright opportunity to upset Germany and finish with the most points. That said, so do Hungary and Scotland.

Impact Players

Switzerland is led by solid veteran leadership with captain Granit Xhaka. The 31-year-old doesn’t have to go far to get to EURO 2024, as he plays in the Bundesliga for Bayer Leverkusen, the newly crowned German champions.

Xhaka will be relied on to lead Switzerland into the next round. He and Xherdan Shaqiri are expected to be the focal points of this squad. With both players over 30, there is no shortage of veterans and mature players at EURO 2024 for Switzerland.

Torino’s Ricardo Rodriguez is yet another roughly 30-year-old with a plethora of experience. The left-back is crucial to Switzerland’s defensive strategy, which they manage to do quite well.

With 35-year-old Yann Sommer as goalkeeper, Switzerland has a serviceable chance of grinding out a low-scoring upset over Germany. Outclassing the hosts will be their largest problem, but this Swiss team is very tough to beat.

Can they find enough offense this summer?

Past Performances & Team Form

The Swiss relied on their superior defense to edge out Ireland for a 1-0 win in March. They followed up three days later with a respectable 0-0 draw versus Denmark.

It was a bounce-back spot for Switzerland following a 1-0 loss to Romania in November. They have the talent to ugly a game up, but an elite goal scorer would be helpful.

Switzerland’s Last Five Results:

  • Switzerland 1 – Israel 1 (Nov. 15, 2023)
  • Switzerland 1 – Kosovo 1 (Nov. 18, 2023)
  • Romania 1 – Switzerland 0 (Nov. 21, 2023)
  • Switzerland 0 – Denmark 0 (March 23, 2024)
  • Switzerland 1 – Ireland 0 (March 26, 2024)

Switzerland hasn’t scored more than one goal in a match since October 15 versus Belarus. When they were more aggressive offensively, the defense allowed three goals in a 3-3 draw, however.

It will be difficult to breach Germany’s defense in their current form, so they’ll need to be patient and likely strive for a 1-0 win or a goalless draw.

Hungary – Are They Getting Enough Respect?

Hungary’s odds of +650 equal an implied probability to win Group A of 13.3%. Despite the country’s 2024 European Championship odds indicating a slim chance, they could be a sleeper club going into Germany.

Italian-born manager Marco Rossi was hired by Hungary in 2018. Since then, Rossi has helped steer the Hungarians the right way, directing them to a EURO 2020 and EURO 2024 qualification.

In 2021, they were outmatched with two losses and a draw in the group stage. However, expectations have risen a few notches higher at EURO 2024. Rossi’s next goal must be getting his squad to the next level.

Impact Players

All eyes in Hungary will be on star midfielder Dominik Szoboszlai in Germany. At only 23 years old, Szoboszlai has claimed the captaincy of the Hungarian national team.

He has quickly asserted himself as one of the most complete players in the Premier League. Szoboszlai has been crucial to Liverpool’s performance in the 2023-24 season3.

The attacking midfielder will be leaned on heavily in the group stage. Being so dependent on Szoboszlai may not be the best strategy versus Germany, but he could take a match over against Switzerland and Scotland!

26-year-old Roland Sallai will be asked to step up and provide Hungary with a secondary playmaker next to Szoboszlai. In a three-match group stage, these two have the potential to be a dangerous duo.

Past Performances & Team Form

Hungary is on a three-match winning streak heading into their final two EURO 2024 prep games. After knocking off Turkey by one goal, they cleared Kosovo 2-0 on March 26.

In the EURO 2024 qualifiers, Hungary scored big wins over Serbia twice, 2-1, and Montenegro, 3-1. Also, Hungary has some confidence that they can defeat Germany after a 1-0 win in a 2022 Nations League contest.

Hungary’s Last Five Results:

  • Hungary 2 – Lithuania 2 (Oct. 17, 2023)
  • Hungary 2 – Bulgaria 2 (Nov. 16, 2023)
  • Hungary 3 – Montenegro 1 (Nov. 19, 2023)
  • Hungary 1 – Turkey 0 (March 22, 2024)
  • Hungary 2 – Kosovo 0 (March 26, 2024)

The Hungarians haven’t lost a match since the defeat to Italy in September 2022! Rossi has Hungary playing well, and most importantly, confident and believing in themselves.

Scotland – Can They Overcome Adversity?

Scotland was recently dealt a significant blow after Lewis Ferguson was recently ruled out of EURO 2024. The star will miss EURO 2024 due to an ACL injury.

The 24-year-old will undergo surgery to repair his knee to keep him out of the tournament. The Bologna midfielder was having a great season and receiving attention from Napoli and Juventus.

With Scotland’s Soccer European Championship Group A odds the worst in Group A, Steve Clarke has his work cut out for him at EURO 2024.

Impact Players

Fortunately, Scotland is not dependent on Ferguson. It will hurt their depth, but Andrew Robertson and Kieran Tierney are expected to be present.

Barring any more injuries, Scotland should be in fine shape with two of their top players and John McGinn healthy, but they need to find the right balance. McGinn can only do so much offensively by himself.

Robertson’s health is paramount, as Scotland needs their captain and elite left-back in Germany. His physical prowess will come in handy against these opponents in Group A. Picking up wins against Switzerland and Germany requires being physical.

Robertson’s vision will undoubtedly be an asset for Scotland, as well. He can get help on the left from Tierney, an elite lockdown defensive player who can also deliver on the other end. I am not concerned with Scotland’s defensive capabilities, though they did not look so hot in their latest assignment.

Past Performances & Team Form

The last time Scotland was together on the pitch, a strong Dutch squad chased them off the field and they dropped a rivalry match versus Northern Ireland. The Netherlands torched the Scots in a 4-0 final on March 22.

In their next outing, Scotland couldn’t get on the score sheet again, as Northern Ireland edged out a 1-0 victory. With three losses and two ties in their previous five outings, they haven’t won a match since September 8, 2023, against Cyprus.

Scotland’s Last Five Results:

  • Spain 2 – Scotland 0 (Oct. 12, 2023)
  • Scotland 2 – Georgia 2 (Nov. 16, 2023)
  • Scotland 3 – Norway 3 (Nov. 19, 2023)
  • Netherlands 4 – Scotland 0 (March 22, 2024)
  • Northern Ireland 1 – Scotland 0 (March 26, 2024)

Scotland has two more prep matches versus Gibraltar and Finland before opening EURO 2024 with a daunting task versus the Germans. I am not convinced that Scotland has the attacking capabilities to put a dent in Group A. McGinn must be at his absolute best.

EURO 2024 Group A Predictions and Best Bets

For my Soccer European Championship Group A predictions, Germany stands out as the clear choice to win. However, Hungary could play spoiler and make this group tougher for Germany than they’d like at home.

In any case, hosts possess the most depth and will have the crowd behind them, so it’s hard to dispute their potential in Group A. While my soccer betting guide doesn’t include Germany lifting the EURO 2024 trophy, they received a favorable draw.

With +650 EURO Group A odds, Hungary might be worth a small play as insurance, but I prefer them to qualify either way. Therefore, my top EURO Group A picks are Germany winning with the most points, and Hungary qualifying for the Round of 16.
