MLB Cy Young Award 2024 Betting Odds

One of the unique aspects of betting on the annual awards in the MPB is that each league has its own awards. You have the chance to bet on the Cy Young winners from the AL and the NL instead of just one for the whole MLB.

Four other pitchers are listed with odds shorter than +1000 to take home the award. Kevin Gausman (+650) and Framber Valdez (+800) have the second and third-best odds, respectively. Corbin Burnes and Pablo Lopez are tied for the fourth-best odds at +950.

As you can see, the competition in the American League will be fierce, but what about the National League?

Last year’s NL Cy Young winner was Blake Snell, who is currently still a free agent and nowhere to be seen. We have a favorite here in Spencer Strider from the Atlanta Braves, who owns the top spot in the latest National League Cy Young odds. Strider is listed at +425 to win his first Cy Young.

Zack Wheeler of the Philadelphia Phillies has the second-best odds at +900. Yoshinobu Yamamoto (+1000), Tyler Glasnow (+1100), and Zac Gallen (+1100) round out the top five, but many other players are close behind them.

Let’s explore the most likely winners in both conferences next.

American League Cy Young Betting Favorites in 2024

There are plenty of talented pitchers in the running for the 2024 American League Cy Young Award. Here is a closer look at the guys currently in the top five in the latest MBL Cy Young odds in the AL.

Gerrit Cole (+625)

New York Yankees star pitcher Gerrit Cole is listed at +625 to win back-to-back Cy Young awards after getting the honor for a first time in 2023. He has also been the runner-up on two occasions, losing to Justin Verlander and Robbie Ray in 2019 and 2021, respectively.

It is not unheard of for a pitcher to win back-to-back Cy Youngs, but it is rare. The last person to do it was Jacob deGrom, who did it in 2018 and 2019. No pitcher in the AL has pulled consecutive Cy Young-winning seasons since Pedro Martines did it in 1999 and 2000.

However, Cole made history last season by becoming the first Yankees pitcher to win the award since Roger Clemens (2001). If he can stay healthy for another year, then Cole has a great chance to make history again this year by winning the AL Cy Young in back-to-back seasons.

Kevin Gausman (+650)

Kevin Gausman, currently on the Toronto Blue Jays, has the second-best odds to win the Cy Young in the American League. Most sports betting sites have Gausman listed at +650 or so to win the award. Gausman placed third in Al Cy Young voting last season after leading the AL with 237 strikeouts.

After bouncing around for a few years, Gaus appears to have found a home in Toronto. He is going into his third season with the team after signing a five-year deal in December 2021.

If Gaus can continue to have success for the Blue Jays, then he should be a contender for the Cy Young late into the year. However, he has been inconsistent at times in his career. A low winning percentage on the season could hurt Gausman in the eyes of voters.

Framber Valdez (+800)

Up next is Houston Astros pitcher Framber Valdez. He has spent his entire MLB career with the Astros and was a part of the 2022 World Series championship team. Bovada has the lefty listed at +800 to win the Cy Young.

Valdez received just six points in the Cy Young voting last year. Despite the lack of recognition, he still had a great season for the Astros. Valdez threw a no-hitter against Cleveland and won Astros’ Pitcher of the Year.

It was Valdez’s second time winning the award. Overall, he threw 200 strikeouts in 31 starts last season and threw two shutouts. If the pitcher can take another step forward this year, then Valdez is a good early pick for the Cy Young, and the Astros will be a popular World Series prediction.

Corbin Burnes (+950)

Corbin Burns is tied for the fourth-best odds to win Cy Young in the American League. The Baltimore Orioles pitcher is listed at +950 to be named the best pitcher this season.

Burnes started his career in Milwaukee and made three All-Star appearances with the Brewers. He also led the NL in ERA in 2021 and claimed the Cy Young that season.

It’s interesting that Burnes is on a new team after getting traded in February. Changing the scenery should provide a fresh start for Burnes after a less-than-ideal final season in Milwaukee. He made three straight All-Star games in the NL and should immediately be a contender in the American League.

Pablo Lopez (+950)

Rounding out the top five in the latest MLB Cy Young odds for the AL is Pablo Lopez of the Minnesota Twins.

The pitcher made his MLB debut in 2018 and spent his first five years with Miami. He joined the Twins last year and made his first All-Star appearance in his first year in Minnesota, earning 11 points in the Cy Young voting last year. However, all of his points came from fourth and fifth-place votes. Lopez will need to take several steps forward this season if he wants to be a serious Cy Young candidate.

National League Cy Young Betting Favorites in 2024

The National League has plenty of great pitchers competing for its Cy Young Award, too. Here are the latest favorites to win National League Cy Young odds, courtesy of Bovada.

Spencer Strider (+425)

The pitcher with the best odds to win the Cy Young in the National League is Spencer Strider (+425). He made his professional debut with the Atlanta Braves in 2021 and has quickly established himself as a top pitcher in the MLB.

Strider finished fourth in NL Cy Young voting last season with 68 total points. He did not get any first-place votes but received six second-place votes.

Despite not winning the Cy Young, Strider did break several records last year, including the Braves strikeout record for a single season (286). He reached 100 strikeouts in a season in just 61 games, breaking Jacob deGrom’s record. Strider also set a new personal best and broke his own record by reaching 200 strikeouts in just 123.1 innings pitched.

The guy has a lot of momentum going into the 2024 season, so he definitely deserves to be the main favorite for the NL Cy Young Award.

Zack Wheeler (+900)

The player with the second-best National League Cy Young odds in 2024 is Zack Wheeler (+900). Wheeler currently plays for the Philadelphia Phillies after signing a five-year deal with the team in December 2019.

He had a banner year in 2021, leading the NL in strikeouts and being named an All-Star. As a result, the pitcher was named to the ALL-MLB Second Team and finished second in the Cy Young voting that season.

Over the last two years, though, Wheeler’s performance has declined. He had a 2.78 ERA in 2021, but it slipped to 2.82 in 2022 and then 3.61 last season. Wheeler needs to return to his 2021 form to be a viable Cy Young candidate.

Yoshinobu Yamamoto (+1000)

One of the more surprising favorites in the NL betting odds is Yoshinobu Yamamoto. The Japanese pitching sensation recently signed with the LA Dodgers and should make his MLB debut this season. He is listed at +1000 in the Cy Young current odds and is a top MLB Rookie of the Year pick for his conference.

Yamamoto is a right-handed pitcher and dominated the Nippon Professional Baseball (NPB) league in Japan. He earned a 70-29 career record, a 1.82 ERA, and 922 strikeouts in his career. Yamamoto also won three MVP awards and was a five-time All-Star.

The Dodgers signed the Japanese star to a 12-year, $325 million contract this offseason. If he can live up to the hype, Yamamoto could be a great bet to win the Cy Young in his rookie season.

Tyler Glasnow (+1100)

Another new LA Dodgers star in the top five is Tyler Glasnow. He signed with the team in December and is listed at +1100 to win his first Cy Young award this season.

Glasnow is entering his ninth MLB season and spent the first part of his career with the Pirates and the Rays. After missing the start of last season, Glasnow went on to earn a 10-7 record and a 3.53 ERA in 2023.

There are plenty of stars already on the Dodgers roster, which should take some pressure off of Glasnow. Having a career year in his debut season with a new team will be easier said than done, though.

Zac Gallen (+1100)

Rounding out the list of NL Cy Young contenders is Arizona Diamondbacks pitcher Zac Gallen. He is tied with Glasnow at +1100 for the fourth-best 2024 National League Cy Young odds.

Gallen made his first All-Star team last year and was named to the All-MLB First Team for the first time. He also pitched in Game 5 of the World Series, throwing six no-hit innings. Arizona lost the series, but Gallen played well.

That loss could fuel Gallen to the best season of his career. The pitcher earned one first-place vote for the Cy Young last season and finished in the top five in 2022. Based on his last two seasons, Gallen appears primed to finally win a Cy Young this season.

Best MLB Cy Young Award Sleepers in 2024

The MLB regular season features 162 games, so there is plenty of time for players to rise and fall in Cy Young voting. Betting on Cy Young sleepers could be your ticket to a major win this season, so I want to highlight a few dark horses for each conference.

Best AL Cy Young 2024 Longshots

Bovada has odds on dozens of pitchers for each league. Here are three AL Cy Young sleepers that I would consider betting on.

  • Max Scherzer (+3500) – Texas Rangers
  • Taj Bradley (+15000) – Tampa Bay Rays
  • JP Sears (+20000) – Oakland Athletics

Scherzer (+3500) is a three-time Cy Young winner and is coming off a World Series win with the Rangers. Taj Bradley (+15000) played well as a rookie last year and could make a huge jump this year. JP Sears (+20000) plays for the lowly Athletics, so it should be too hard for him to stand out this season.

The odds on all three guys are just too high, so backing them with a small wager makes a lot of sense.

Best NL Cy Young 2024 Longshots

You can also bet on longshots in the National League. Here are three sleepers from the NL that I believe could be surprise Cy Young candidates.

  • Jesus Luzardo (+3500) – Miami Marlins
  • Merrill Kelly (+4000) – Arizona Diamondbacks
  • Alex Cobb (+7500) – San Francisco Giants

Jesus Luzardo’s (+3500) time with the Marlins has been plagued by injuries and contract disputes. I he can put that behind him, Luzardo can make a run at the Cy Young.

Merrill Kelly (+4000) and Alex Cobb (+7500) are both older players who are still hungry for their first Cy Young awards. Their experience should help, so the odds look too high.

MLB Cy Young Award 2024 Predictions and Picks

Betting on MLB awards is a great way to make the long regular season more exciting. Here are my Cy Young predictions for the 2024 season.

AL Cy Young Prediction and Best Bets for 2024

Gerrit Cole (+625), Kevin Gausman (+650), and Framber Valdez (+800) lead the way in the latest AL Cy Young betting odds. Cole won the award last season, and I believe he will do it again this year.

It is a close race, but Cole is the favorite for a reason. He finally broke through last season after finishing second multiple times in his career. Now that he is a Cy Young winner, I believe he will double down and become the first back-to-back winner in the AL in over two decades.

If you add the tasty odds, this is the best for the American League.

NL Cy Young Prediction and Best Bets for 2024

In the National League, Spencer Strider (+425) of the Atlanta Braves is the clear Cy Young favorite. The next closest pitchers are Zack Wheeler (+900) and Yoshinobu Yamamoto (+1000) of the Philadelphia Phillies and LA Dodgers, respectively.

Without knowing where Blake Snell will sign, it is hard to bet against Strider. If Snell does return to the NL, then he would be a good pick, too. For now, though, I will stick with Strider to win his first Cy Young.

I expected lower odds, so getting +425 for the obvious favorite is solid value.
