2026-27 NFL Assistant Coach of the Year Betting Odds, Favorites, Predictions

Mike McDaniel (+450)

The NFL assistant coach of the year have McDaniel at the top as offensive coordinator of the Chargers. McDaniel turned the Dolphins’ offense around when he was named head coach in 2022.

Miami had plenty of offensive talent, but health and consistency were major problems, especially with quarterback Tua Tagovailoa, who is now a backup in Atlanta, and receiver Tyreek Hill, who doesn’t have a team and is injured.

McDaniel can scheme receivers open and create explosive plays with Justin Herbert, and Ladd McConkey could be one of the top receivers in the league. However, there are questions about Omarion Hampton at running back, and the interior offensive line.

The Chargers were 21st in DVOA on offense last season, and McDaniel would likely have to make them a top-five offense.

For anyone comparing assistant coach of the year betting NFL options, the +450 price does not offer enough value for me. The line concerns and at running back make McDaniel an easy pass at short odds.

Vic Fangio (+1000)

Vic Fangio at +1000 is difficult to judge. The 68-year-old won this award in 2018 as defensive coordinator of the Chicago Bears. That earned Fangio a head-coaching job with Denver. He’s a defensive coordinator once again with the Eagles nowadays, and has done a fine job.

The major argument against him is trajectory. Philadelphia ranked seventh in defensive DVOA last season, which is excellent, but they were first the year before. The team is supposed to be good on that end, which works against Fangio.

He still has outstanding talent. Jalen Carter can take over games, while Philadelphia may have the NFL’s best cornerback group. Jonathan Greenard’s health could decide whether the Eagles move from very good to dominant or simply stay near last season’s level. Greenard, who was traded from Minnesota in April, may miss Week 1 through injury.

Safety is another concern. Defensive coaches often win this award when their units dominate without a clear weakness. Familiarity with Fangio’s system also works both ways. The players should execute it well, but there may be less room for a dramatic leap after two years in the scheme.

Fangio is a proven coordinator, but he may not create enough buzz to separate himself from the field. Among the NFL assistant coach betting lines, his +1000 price does not make up for that narrative problem. There is better value out there.

Vance Joseph (+1100)

Vance Joseph at +1100 offers real value. Denver’s defense has been elite since allowing 70 points to Miami in Week 3 of 2023. The Broncos finished fifth in defensive DVOA last season, and have led the NFL in sacks in each of the last two season. Patrick Surtain II leads an excellent secondary, while the pass rush regularly disrupts quarterbacks.

Joseph also has an appealing story for voters: he turned a historic embarrassment into a top defense. That type of improvement can attract attention, especially if Denver’s defense carries an average offense and helps the team reach the playoffs. He also almost won this award last season after finishing second to New England’s Josh McDaniels.

There are some concerns. The Broncos must replace Dre Greenlaw at inside linebacker, and losing John Franklin-Myers creates uncertainty along the defensive front. However, Joseph’s scheme and the talent around those positions should limit the damage. Denver has built a clear defensive identity that should survive a few personnel changes.

At +1100, bettors are backing a coordinator who has already shown he can improve a unit. If Denver finishes with a top-three defense once again and the Broncos have postseason success, Joseph should become a serious contender in the best NFL assistant coach of the year bets.

Christian Parker (+1400)

Christian Parker is +1400 after taking over the Dallas defense after working under Fangio in Denver, where he was the defensive-backs coach (and also, the passing-game coordinator).

The price may look attractive next to new Baltimore offensive coordinator Declan Doyle at +1200, but Parker faces a difficult job. He joins a defense that finished last in DVOA. That creates room for improvement, but shows how much work is required.

The Cowboys are relying heavily on unproven players. Rookie Caleb Downs brings plenty of hype, but asking first-year players such as Downs and Malachi Lawrence to lead a massive turnaround creates risk. Quinnen Williams provides star power and Rashan Gary could be good, but the pieces must fit quickly. It’s also a concern that Williams could take a step back after signing a massive deal in the offseason.

Parker’s award case depends on an immediate and dramatic defensive improvement. That requires several uncertain outcomes to break the right way at once. I see a world in which Parker improves the Cowboys enough to win, but I need something like +1800 or so to place a wager on that.
