Team USA – Can the Americans Protect Home Soil?

After months of speculation, the Team USA roster has been finalized! No. 1 golfer in the world, Scottie Scheffler, headlines an American side that features some familiar names.

Based on the Ryder Cup rankings, the top six golfers automatically earn a spot in the tournament. Captain Keegan Bradley had the power to choose six additional captain’s picks to round out the 12-player roster:

Scheffler is the top-rated golfer in the world, and it’s not even a debate. Just when his detractors thought he’d slow down, Scheffler has applied more pressure on his competition and destroyed the field.

In 2025, Scheffler continued his hot form from last year, with six wins and 17 top 10s! The wins include two majors — the PGA Championship and the Open Championship.

Despite losing and finishing in T4 in the Tour Championship, it was yet another strong performance from Scheffler. And, most recently, he bounced back to capture the Procore Championship in one of his final tune-ups for the Ryder Cup.

The 29-year-old Texas native has won two of his last three starts, including the BMW Championship on August 17 and the Procore Championship on September 14.

Additionally, Scheffler finished in the top 10 in 15 consecutive starts! Scheffler’s effort in the Procore Championship to win by four strokes put a bow on his pre-Ryder Cup schedule. The rest of his teammates had strong performances, too.

He is ranked No. 1 in the OWGR Rankings with 883.74 points. Additionally, Scheffler leads the PGA Tour in SG: Total, SG: Off the Tee, and SG: Approach to Green. All the major metrics belong to Scheffler, so he’s going to be a huge star for Team USA.

Along with Scheffler, seven out of the top 10 golfers in the OWGR Rankings are Americans. That includes No. 3 Xander Schauffele. Look for Scheffler and Schauffele to be focal points of Team USA and the entire tournament.

Schauffele isn’t having his best year — he has been inconsistent, but capable of getting hot. The last time he played in the Ryder Cup in the US, he went 3-1-0 at Whistling Straits. Additionally, Schauffele had a strong performance in his most recent major in the Open Championship to finish T7 at Royal Portrush. I have no qualms about Schauffele being dialed in for the Ryder Cup.

Also, note that six out of the top 10 golfers and three of the top 5 in SG: Total on the PGA Tour are Americans on this Ryder Cup squad. Along with Schauffele and Patrick Cantlay, Russell Henley, Justin Thomas, Ben Griffin, and J.J. Spaun rank in the top 10.

Surprisingly, team captain Keegan Bradley decided not to include himself on the Team USA roster. Bradley will watch from the clubhouse, as he aims to make the best decision for the team.

Team Europe – Spoil the Party in the USA?

Team Europe looks for back-to-back titles following an impressive victory two years ago at Marco Simone in Italy. With a green jacket in his closet, Rory McIlroy spearheads the charge for the Europeans in 2025.

Team captain Luke Donald’s Team Europe picks were pretty much as expected. There weren’t any surprises with his captain’s selections. The big kicker for the Europeans is Jon Rahm on the team as a wildcard.

He was one of the best players on the PGA Tour before exiting for LIV Golf and remains a force in the Saudi-backed league.

McIlroy finally got over the hump and won his first Masters title in April. In addition to his first win at a major since 2014, the Brit has been playing a strong game throughout the season. He’s third in SG: Total and SG: Off the Tee, and seventh in SG: Putting.

Additionally, McIlroy’s driver, as usual, has been belting the ball at an average of 323 yards for second on the PGA Tour. That’s expected from McIlroy. It’s been the putter that has been the real game changer this season. McIlroy’s putter has betrayed him in the past, but he’s shored things up well.

McIlroy is in solid form after recently winning at the K Club in Kildare at the Irish Open on September 7. He sank a late eagle to force a playoff and then ousted Joakim Lagergren. In his latest start, McIlroy had a decent showing in the DP Tour’s BMW PGA Championship to finish T20.

Finally, Tommy Fleetwood can call himself not only a PGA Tour winner, but also a FedEx Cup champ! After 164 events played, Fleetwood struck at the Tour Championship to win at 18-under par.

The 34-year-old Englishman is second in SG: Total and third in SG: Tee to Green this year. Fleetwood is also sixth in SG: Approach to Green, so his all-around game is amongst the best. And now, he has a coveted PGA Tour trophy on his mantle in one of the biggest tournaments.

In his first tournament back on the course, Fleetwood looked rusty with a lackluster effort to finish T46 at the BMW PGA Championship on the European Tour. However, he should prove to be a major asset for Team Europe in the Ryder Cup.

The talent up front with McIlroy, Fleetwood, and Rahm is awfully impressive. That’s a 1-2-3 punch that should cause a lot of noise at Blackpage. However, the bottom of the depth chart on Team Europe isn’t particularly inspiring.

After Straka and Aberg, the Europeans need someone to step up, which could be Matt Fitzpatrick or Viktor Hovland. Fitzpatrick was expected to be a key member of Team Europe, but he’s had inconsistent form in 2025. The same can be said for Hovland, who has been up and down, but certainly has the talent to succeed.
