Jokingly or not, Trump has mentioned a potential 2028 run multiple times. The President even has “Trump 2028” merchandise for his MAGA followers to buy.

Running for a third term would be unconstitutional, but Trump is known for trying to find loopholes and workarounds. He is listed at 8-1 odds to be on the 2028 presidential election ballot in the latest political lines at BetUS.

Trump has been the dominant force in the GOP for a decade and would presumably win the Republican nomination. Even if he did not win the primary, he would have more than enough support from MAGA voters to form his own party and run as a third-party candidate.

However, attempting to rename the strait would only put more of a focus on the war with Iran, a deeply unpopular issue for Trump and the GOP ahead of the midterms.

The Panama Canal, on the other hand, was a popular topic for Trump in 2025. The president claimed that the deal between President Jimmy Carter and Panama was “foolish”.

Claiming to rename the canal could be a key distraction from the Iran war and help reinvigorate the MAGA base ahead of November’s elections.

Trump’s Exit Date

The health of any 80+ year old is hard to speculate, but Trump has the benefit of the best doctors money can buy. Assuming he does live through the rest of his current term and is in reasonable health, the only way he does not make it to 2029 as president is to step down or be impeached.

With the midterm elections coming up, Trump could be staring down a third impeachment if Democrats flip enough congressional seats. However, the Dems would need a true blue wave to gain enough seats to impeach and remove Trump from office.

Every House seat is up for grabs in November, so gaining the few seats Democrats need to win a majority is not out of the question. For what it is worth, BetOnline has Trump listed at -350 to be impeached before his term ends. An impeachment alone does not remove him from office, though, unless the Dems control the Senate.

Gaining control of the Senate is more challenging, as only 16 of the 33 Senate seats up for election are held by Republicans.

Trump has kept to friendly audiences for most of 2026, but that may not be an option in the upcoming months. The Republicans need the president to be active on the campaign trail to motivate the MAGA base ahead of the midterms.

Campaigning also opens the president up to criticism from constituents in battleground states. Increasing his exposure to these voters also increases Trump’s chances of interacting with critics.

Trump’s low approval rating is another factor that increases the chances of voters confronting the president while he is campaigning. Given his past reactions to negative interactions, angry voters could prompt Trump to flip the bird again before the year is over.

Trump’s Next Press Secretary

Karoline Leavitt stepped down as the Press Secretary in August, and Trump has yet to fill the position. Having a skilled Press Secretary will be vital for the second half of Trump’s term.

Maria Bartiromo at +250 is also an intriguing option. Bartiromo was a staunch Trump ally at Fox News but was recently let go from the company. Trump has hired many former Fox News employees in his second term, including Jeanine Pirro and Pete Hegseth.

Choosing Bartiromo would give Trump a friendly and experienced Press Secretary while rewarding a decade-plus-long ally.
