World Wide Technology Championship Preview and Best Bets – by Ginger Joe

The World Wide Technology Championship heads to Los Cabos in Mexico this week, with the PGA Tour making its annual stop at El Cardonal at Diamante. Designed by Tiger Woods, it’s a course that has produced plenty of low scoring in recent years. I’m expecting another week when players will need to make plenty of birdies to get themselves into contention.

El Cardonal is a par-72 over 7,452 yards, and although it’s a fairly generous course off the tee, there are still some interesting holes that require good positioning. With four par-fives and a number of shorter par-fours, there are plenty of scoring opportunities, but the key will be taking advantage of them. The Paspalum greens are another factor to consider, and getting comfortable with the putting surfaces early could be important.

For me, I’m looking for players who can be aggressive with their irons, make plenty of birdies and get hot with the putter. Approach play is always important, but this is also a course where you need to convert chances and keep the momentum going. I’d be looking closely at birdie or better percentage, par-five scoring and players who have shown they can go really low.

It’s a slightly different feel to some bigger PGA Tour events, but there’s still plenty of quality in the field, with defending champion Ben Griffin, Tony Finau and Ryan Gerard among those involved. Griffin shot an incredible 29-under last year, so we know the scoring opportunities are there, and hopefully we can have a nice profitable week. Last week Kris Ventura placed in tied second for us after a slow start, but we took a nice bit of profit.

1. Kris Ventura (+3500)

Kris Ventura is one I’m happy to stick with again this week after an encouraging performance at the Mexico Open. He finished runner-up last week, playing some really good golf, and there were plenty of positives to take from his game. One of his biggest strengths remains his driving, where he has been one of the better players on the PGA Tour this season. He has the power to give himself plenty of scoring opportunities. With the generous fairways at El Cardonal, I think that strength could be particularly useful.

What I also liked last week was how well he managed his game under pressure. He went through his final 27 holes without dropping a shot, which is a really encouraging sign heading into another event where low scoring will be essential. His ball-striking has been good enough to compete well above his ranking for some time. Now, we’re starting to see those performances turn into stronger finishes.

The one area that can still hold him back is the putting, and that’s probably the biggest question mark again this week. However, if he can carry the confidence from last week’s performance onto the greens, there is plenty to like. This course should give him opportunities to use his driving advantage, and I think his approach play is good enough to keep him right in the mix.

I’m happy to give Ventura another chance this week. He’s shown that his game is in a good place, and after getting so close last week, I’d be surprised if he doesn’t fancy his chances of going one better.

2. Ben Silverman (+9000)

Ben Silverman is a fascinating contender this week, particularly given the form he has shown recently. He finished T3 at the Bermuda Championship before following that up with a T19 at the Mexico Open, so there are plenty of positives to take from his game heading into this event. Furthermore, he also finished T21 here last year, shooting 18-under, which suggests he can handle the course and take advantage of the scoring opportunities on offer.

I think this setup should suit him nicely, with the generous fairways giving him the chance to get into position and attack the greens. His approach play has been encouraging recently too, and that’s something I want to see from players this week. This is a course where you need to create plenty of birdie chances, and Silverman looks to be striking the ball well enough to do that.

The main question is whether he can get the putter going. His putting has been a little inconsistent lately, and in an event where the scoring is likely to be extremely low, you need to convert those chances. However, with his recent form and a decent course showing last year, I think there is enough to like here.

Ben Silverman is certainly one I can get behind at the right price. He’s shown he can compete in these events, and if the putter cooperates, I don’t see why he can’t put together another strong week. He’s worth considering at the prices.
