Craps Field Bet Guide: Odds, Payout, House Edge, Strategy

The craps field bet is one of the exciting options in the popular casino game. You essentially wager on a large set of numbers, giving yourself a big chance to hit a winner.

In this guide, I explain what numbers are included when you’re betting on the field in craps, highlighting the payouts and odds for each. I also compare the house edge to other craps wagers and highlight the most popular field bet strategy!

What Is a Field Bet in Craps?

A field bet in craps is a wager on the shooter (person or machine) rolling a 2, 3, 4, 9, 10, 11 or 12 on the next roll. Any of these numbers wins on a field bet with each payout depending on the likelihood of the number being rolled.

You either double or triple your money on a win, depending on the number, and you lose if 5, 6, 7, or 8 is rolled.

The next section provides a full breakdown of the payouts and odds for betting the field in craps.

1. Craps Field Bet Odds and Payouts Chart

The following table covers all potential outcomes if you bet on the field in craps on most tables:

Number RolledChance of Being RolledPayout Based on Your Wager
21/36 (2.78%)2:1
31/16 (6.25%)1:1
41/12 (8.33%)1:1
5, 6, 7 or 85/9 (55.56%)Lose your Bet
91/9 (11.11%)1:1
101/12 (8.33%)1:1
111/16 (6.25%)1:1
121/36 (2.78%)2:1
Total for all winning numbers4/9 (44.44%)1:1 or 2:1 (depending on the number)

Your total chance to win when you place a field bet in craps is 44.44%. You can break down all scenarios into three possible options:

  • Tripling your money: you will get lucky and hit 2 or 12 in 5.56% of the rolls, getting a nice payout of 3x your initial craps field bet.
  • Doubling your money: the second-best scenario when betting on the field is to hit the other winning numbers (3, 4, 9, 10, 11) and double your money, which happens 38.88% of the time.
  • Losing your money: 55.56% of the time you will lose your money when you place a field bet in craps because a losing number will be rolled (5, 6, 7, 8).

Now that you know the payouts and odds, let’s discuss the house edge.

2. Craps Field Bet House Edge Compared to Other Wagers

The field bet in craps usually comes with a house edge of 5.5%, based on the odds and payouts I showed you in the previous section. While certain tables offer more favorable conditions (3:1 payouts for 12, for example), they are rare to find.

If you can find a table that offers 3:1 payouts instead of 2:1 for 12 or 2, the house edge drops to 2.78%. If the payout on both is 3:1, the house edge drops to zero. Unfortunately, these scenarios are rare to find nowadays,

That’s why I will operate under the assumption you’re playing with the standard rules and a 5.5% house edge. Here’s a quick comparison of the field bet with other popular craps wagers.

Craps BetHouse Edge
Field Bet Craps5.5%
Don’t Pass Bet2.4%
Pass Line Bet 1.4%
Place Bet 4 or 106.7%
Horn Bet11%+

As you can see from the table above, craps house edge varies greatly and the field bet is far from ideal. There are much better options out there, but there are also worse. Many players still like the wager and use it, especially in one common strategy that I cover next.

3. Field Bet Craps Strategy: The Iron Cross

The craps field bet is best used in something called the Iron Cross. This craps strategy couples a field bet with place bets on the losing numbers.

Place bets are craps bets on a single number coming up before the shooter craps out. In short, the craps Iron Cross strategy reduces the losing numbers to just the roll of a seven. Here’s a list of all the bets you need to place and the payout for each of them.

Iron Cross Odds and Payouts Table

Iron Cross Winning NumbersPayout
Place Bet 53:2
Place Bet 65:6
Place bet 85:6
Field Bet 3, 4, 5, 9, 101:1
Field Bet 2, 122:1

With the craps Iron Cross strategy, your probability of losing is only 16.67% and the house edge is reduced to 2.37%. Coupled with the 3:1 odds boost, this is often a better edge than a place bet.

Is the Craps Field Bet a Good Wager?

The craps field bet comes with a fairly high house edge in most cases, making it a poor choice from a financial perspective. However, it brings a lot of excitement because of the consistent wins and the opportunity to hit a solid 2:1 payout if you get lucky.
