In a game I expected to go down to the wire, I’m taking the Lions to stay within the number on Thursday night. Detroit opened the season with a 31-30 overtime win over New Orleans, but the score doesn’t tell the whole story.
The Lions jumped out to a 21-0 lead before the Saints rallied, and the offense showed enough firepower to make this a difficult matchup for a Buffalo defense that looked vulnerable in Week 1.
The was also a classic lookahead angle for the Lions last week. Detroit had Buffalo on the horizon in Week 2, and the Lions were able to get through the Saints despite some defensive issues.
RB Jahmyr Gibbs was outstanding with 156 rushing yards and two touchdowns, while the Lions finished with 369 total yards. Jared Goff also avoided turnovers and sacks, giving Detroit a strong start offensively despite the lapses on defense.

Buffalo is coming off a massive 36-31 road win over Houston, but the Bills’ defense gave up 31 points and 381 yards. The new Jim Leonhard defense had communication issues in coverage, while Houston repeatedly found success through the air and on the ground. Buffalo ultimately forced the late turnover, but this was far from a dominant defensive performance.
That creates an opportunity for Detroit’s offense. Lions’ WR1 Amon-Ra St. Brown scored twice in Week 1, and Gibbs has demonstrated in his career that he can be a major factor both as a runner and receiver.
The primary advantages for the Lions in this matchup have to be their offensive line and run game against the Bills. Last year, Buffalo allowed 133.6 rushing yards per game (28th), while opponents averaged a whopping 5.1 yards per, for 30th in the NFL. Gibbs should roll.
The Lions’ secondary is certainly the biggest concern after allowing New Orleans’ QB Tyler Shough to throw for 410 yards, so I’m not expecting Detroit to completely shut down Josh Allen. However, Kelvin Sheppard should have more defensive looks available as the Lions open up the playbook in this one. Expect edge rusher Aidan Hutchinson to get into the backfield.
It’s also worth noting that the Bills just won a dramatic road game against a fellow AFC contender, and now they return home for the first game at their new $2.2 billion Highmark Stadium. Conversely, the Lions have already had this game circled on their calendar in the preseason.
Buffalo should be favored, but 4.5 points is too much. Detroit has enough offensive firepower to trade scores, and I expect the Lions to make this a one-score game deep into the fourth quarter. Gibbs on the ground should be the difference, so Lions +4.5 is one of my best Thursday Night Football picks this week.

Jared Goff and the Lions’ offense should create even more problems for Buffalo in Week 2. In 2025-26, Detroit ranked among the NFL’s top five scoring offenses at 28.3 points per game. The Lions are off to another fast start after scoring 31 points against the Saints, a defense that has proven better than advertised.
Detroit’s play-action passing game should be especially effective in this matchup. Jahmyr Gibbs should find success on the ground, creating opportunities for Goff to attack downfield. I am confident that Allen will come out firing in the Bills’ home opener at Highmark Stadium. The offensive firepower from last week should immediately carry over against the Lions.
That’s not an easy assignment on the road versus the Texans’ physical defense, and now the soft secondary against the Lions should give up big plays out of the gate. The Lions might be able to adjust, but I anticipate the Bills getting into the end zone early.
The Lions ultimately conceded 469 yards total, with Shough having a field day in the second half against a secondary that lacks much talent at the moment. At least seven points for the Bills is one of the best TNF prop bets this week.

Fresh off signing his brand new three-year, $67.5 million contract, Gibbs had a big day on the ground in Week 1. He ran for 156 yards and two scores on 29 carries. Gibbs received a heavy workload, I expect more of the same against the Bills.
The mismatch in this game is fairly evident. Buffalo struggled to contain the run a season ago and there weren’t enough upgrades in the offseason to justify a huge turnaround. Now they are assigned with limiting one of the best running backs in the NFL.
Last season, Gibbs earned his big pay increase by rushing for 1,223 yards and five years per carry. He’s rushed for at least five yards per carry in all three seasons and had 5.4 per carry versus the Saints.
I expect from Gibbs to do a lot of damage this week, so I’m happy to back the star RB to deliver over 89.5 rushing yards.

Detroit’s secondary should improve, but Allen’s passing prop still looks too low. The Bills quarterback completed 20 of 29 passes for 334 yards and two touchdowns against one of the NFL’s top defenses from the 2025-26 season.

That performance extended Allen’s streak to four consecutive games with at least 262 passing yards. He has also topped 250 passing yards in nine of his last 13 games dating back to last season. If Shough can throw for 410 yards, Allen should have no trouble reaching at least 250 against the Lions.
I’m projecting 270 to 280 passing yards, which should be enough for Allen to clear this number comfortably.
Anytime Touchdown: Amon-Ra St. Brown (DET) (+105)
Along with Gibbs getting involved in the Lions’ offense against the Saints, St. Brown had a huge performance through the air. He and Goff did big damage in an electric effort from the Lions’ WR1.
St. Brown concluded the matchup with 67 yards and two scores on 10 receptions. Goff looked in his direction 14 times and it’s unlikely that’s going to stop. The Bills had no answers for Texans’ WR1 Nico Collins as he tallied 75 yards and a touchdown on seven receptions.

The Lions’ passing attack will be tougher and St. Brown should put more pressure on the secondary than Collins. With 10+ touchdowns in the last three seasons, he’s well on pace to do it again after scoring twice in Week 1. Look for St. Brown to strike again, as he ranks highly as one of the best TNF props this week.
