The Giro d’Italia 2025 is a three-week race qualifying as one of the three Grand Tour events, together with La Vuelta and Tour de France.
The race begins in Durrës, Albania, on Friday, May 9, 2025, and will cover 21 stages before ending in Rome on Sunday, June 1, 2025. The 2025 edition of the Giro d’Italia will be the first time that the race starts in the Balkans.

Stage 1 to Stage 3 will take place through Albania from Durazzo to Tirana. A total of 210 miles comprises the first three stages in Albania. Following the rest day, riders will head from Alberobello to Lecce in Southern Italy.
Three sprint stages will commence before the peloton reaches the first mountain stage in Taliacozzo for Stage 7. The first week of competition concludes with a breathtaking trip through the unpaved Strade Bianche gravel roads.
Following a 122.4-mile jaunt from Gubbio to Siena, the second rest day commences before heading to Lucca for Stage 10. Lucca to Pisa consists of a 17.7-mile individual time trial, and then riders head north to the San Pellegrino and Alpe climb.
Stage 12 includes a sprint finish to Viadana, and then a brief trip through Slovenia. Stage 15 is a grueling phase for the peloton, which features 2.5 miles of mountain climbing! After the rest day, the third and final week commences with five difficult climbs across the Trentino region.
Stage 18 has a sprint to Cesano Maderno, before Stage 19 and Stage 20 test riders with grueling double-digit gradients and a stretch of gravel to Colle delle Finestre. The last stage of the Giro d’Italia concludes with 86.7 miles, all taking place in Rome!

Pogacar’s absence in the Giro d’Italia 2025 opens the door for Roglic to win his second crown in Italy since 2023. Also, Ayuso has a big chance to capture back-to-back Giro d’Italia titles for UAE Team Emirates.

The 35-year-old Slovenian is coming off a huge win in the Volta Ciclista a Catalunya in Spain. He took first in the general classification, points classification, and mountain classification from March 24 to March 30.

It was a better result from Roglic after he finished eighth in the general classification in his first race this year in the Volta ao Algarve em Bicicleta. Roglic favored the seven-stage race over five, with the longer distances more to his benefit.
While Roglic didn’t participate in the Giro d’Italia last year, he won the eight-stage Critérium du Dauphiné and the 21-stage La Vuelta Ciclista a España. He crashed in Stage 12 of the Tour de France and bowed out of the event, but overall, Roglic has been riding in top form over the last year.
Roglic is the man to beat, but can he win back-to-back races over Ayuso?
Juan Ayuso (+175)
Roglic and Ayuso went down to the wire and had some epic battles in the Volta Catalunya. They traded wins early, with Ayuso coming out on top to win Stage 3. He placed second behind Roglic in the following stage.
The difference in the race was Roglic turning on the afterburners in the final stage to win. Meanwhile, Ayuso ran into some difficulties and finished 34th. Otherwise, these two weren’t separated by much, and Ayuso ultimately finished second in the general and points classification.
Roglic has the experience edge on the 22-year-old, but Ayuso continues to gain confidence and momentum. Prior to the Volta Catalunya, he won the seven-stage Tirreno-Adriatico. That was one place better than he did in 2024, which is a solid representation of the progress he’s made.

If Ayuso wasn’t the second rider on UAE Team Emirates behind Pogacar, he’d be the No. 1 on another team. He’s that good despite Pogacar stealing the spotlight, and I expect him to continue to grow this season.

If Ayuso and Roglic slip up or crash, expect Yates to be in contention to pick up the pieces. Yates is coming off a disappointing performance in the Volta Catalunya. The 32-year-old Brit had to settle for 32nd, with 10th in Stage 3 his best result.
Nevertheless, Yates has been in stronger form at times this season. He had a solid outing in February to win the Tour of Oman. If Yates can regain that form, he might be able to make things interesting in Italy.

Again, though, the two top contenders will have to suffer an unforeseen event during the race for Yates to win. Along with the loss in the Volta Catalunya, Yates was no match for Ayuso in the Tirreno-Adriatico. Yates finished well behind Ayuso in 16th.
Yates’ best result in the Giro d’Italia was 9th overall in 2017. Outside of Roglic and Ayuso, there isn’t the stiffest competition in this race, so he can absolutely achieve a career-best result. However, a lot will have to go his way to get the outright win!

There is unlikely to be much separating the two as Rome approaches. Will Roglic have the extra kick when he needs it? He put a lot into the final stage of the Volta Catalunya to win, which could impact his chances to last 21 stages in the Giro d’Italia. Roglic isn’t young anymore at 35 years old, so it is worth mentioning!
