The 2026 Berlin Marathon Route: What to Know
Few marathon courses have a stronger reputation for speed than Berlin.
The 42.195-kilometer race begins on Straße des 17. Juni, between the Brandenburg Gate and Kleiner Stern. The runners will start in six waves beginning at 8:45 a.m. local time.
From there, runners make their way through central Berlin on a mostly flat course before returning toward the Brandenburg Gate for one of the most famous finishes in marathon running.
Berlin’s combination of long straightaways, wide roads, and limited elevation changes makes it perfect for fast times. The course has produced 13 marathon world records, more than any other marathon.
Eliud Kipchoge set the current men’s course record of 2:01:09 in 2022. Tigst Assefa owns the women’s course record after running 2:11:53 in 2023.

Berlin Marathon Betting Favorites
Here are the runners I believe will be at the top of the board when the 2026 Berlin Marathon odds can be found at the best sports betting sites.
Men’s Favorites – 2026 Berlin Marathon
Here are some of the leading contenders in the men’s race.
Gabriel Geay (Tanzania)
Gabriel Geay has the fastest personal best in the men’s field at 2:03:00, which he recorded when finishing second at the 2022 Valencia Marathon.
That speed makes Geay an obvious contender in Berlin. However, his personal best is now four years old, creating some questions about whether he can still reach that level.
The good news is that he does not necessarily need to run close to 2:03 to win. Without Sawe in the field, the men’s race could become much more tactical.
Guye Adola (Ethiopia)
Guye Adola knows exactly what it takes to win in Berlin.
The Ethiopian won this race in 2021, beating Kenenisa Bekele and finishing in 2:05:45. He also ran his personal best of 2:03:46 here when finishing second behind Eliud Kipchoge in 2017.
More importantly, Adola has shown strong recent form. He won the Rotterdam Marathon earlier this year in 2:03:54, coming within eight seconds of his career best.
That combination of current form and Berlin experience makes him one of the most interesting runners in the field.
Shura Kitata (Ethiopia)
Shura Kitata could be another serious threat.
The Ethiopian is already a World Marathon Major winner after taking the 2020 London Marathon. He also enters Berlin with some of the best recent form in the field.
Kitata won the 2026 Seville Marathon in February, improving his personal best to 2:03:59.
With several of his main rivals recording their fastest times years ago, Kitata’s recent performance makes him a runner to watch closely.
Getaneh Molla (Ethiopia)
Getaneh Molla owns the second-fastest personal best in the field at 2:03:34.
That time came at the Dubai Marathon in 2019, so it has been many years since Molla reached that level. Still, his career-best performance proves he has the raw speed needed to compete on a course like Berlin.
If the pace is quick from the start, Molla could stay in contention deep into the race.
Selemon Barega (Ethiopia)
Selemon Barega may have the most interesting background of any contender.
He won Olympic gold in the 10,000 meters at the Tokyo Games before eventually moving up to the marathon. Barega won the Seville Marathon in his debut in 2025 and improved his personal best to 2:05:00 at the 2026 Tokyo Marathon.
His marathon resume is not as strong as some of his rivals, but his track speed could become a major advantage if a large group remains together late in the race.
Women’s Favorites – 2026 Berlin Marathon
The women’s race starts with one clear name at the top: Tigst Assefa.
However, the defending champion and several sub-2:20 runners will try to prevent Assefa from winning Berlin for a third time.
Tigst Assefa (Ethiopia)
Tigst Assefa has already made history in Berlin.
She won here in 2022 before returning in 2023 and running 2:11:53, which was the women’s world record at the time.
Assefa has continued to produce elite performances since then. She won the London Marathon for the second time earlier this year in 2:15:41, improving her women-only marathon world record.
Now, she has an even bigger goal.
Assefa has said she wants to challenge the overall women’s world record of 2:09:56. Berlin’s fast course gives her an opportunity to try.
Even if the record is out of reach, Assefa’s 2:11:53 personal best is more than four minutes faster than anyone else in the field.
Rosemary Wanjiru (Kenya)
If Assefa struggles, Rosemary Wanjiru could be the runner most likely to take advantage.
Wanjiru is the defending Berlin champion after winning the 2025 race in 2:21:05. She held off Dera Dida by only three seconds despite extremely hot conditions.
Her personal best of 2:16:14 is also the second-fastest mark among the leading contenders.
Wanjiru does not have Assefa’s top-end speed, but she has already proven that she can win on this course.
Bedatu Hirpa (Ethiopia)
Bedatu Hirpa has emerged as another runner to watch.
She won the 2025 Dubai Marathon in 2:18:27 and followed that performance with another victory in Paris. Earlier this year, Hirpa finished second at the Osaka Marathon in 2:19:54.
She will need another improvement to challenge Assefa, but her recent consistency makes her a strong podium contender.
Dera Dida (Ethiopia)
Dera Dida came painfully close to winning in Berlin last year.
She finished just three seconds behind Wanjiru, crossing the line in 2:21:08. Her career best is considerably faster at 2:18:32.
Having come so close in 2025, Dida has experience on the course and should be comfortable if the race becomes tactical.
Berlin Marathon Weather Predictions for 2026
The early weather outlook appears much better than the hot conditions runners faced in 2025.
Current forecasts show temperatures around 13°C (55°F) early in the race, rising toward approximately 20°C (68°F) around midday. Rain is not expected, while winds should remain relatively light.
Those conditions should give the elite runners a good opportunity to produce fast times.
That will be especially important for Assefa if she follows through with her planned world-record attempt.

2026 Berlin Marathon Betting Predictions
The men’s race is difficult to predict following Sawe’s withdrawal, but Guye Adola is my early pick to win the 2026 Berlin Marathon.
Gabriel Geay has a slightly faster personal best, but Adola’s recent form gives him an edge. He ran 2:03:54 to win Rotterdam earlier this year and has an excellent history in Berlin.
Adola won this race in 2021 and ran his 2:03:46 personal best here in 2017. That gives him the combination of recent form, speed, and course experience I want in my Berlin Marathon prediction.
On the women’s side, Tigst Assefa is my pick to win the 2026 Berlin Marathon.
There is not much reason to look elsewhere unless the odds are extremely short. Assefa owns a 2:11:53 personal best on this course, while Wanjiru’s 2:16:14 is the next-fastest mark among the leading contenders.
The biggest question may not be whether Assefa wins, but how fast she can go. If conditions cooperate and the pacemakers hit their targets, the world record could be in play.
