Nobel Peace Prize 2026 Betting Preview: Favorites, Odds, & Predictions

Yulia Navalnaya (+400)

The widow of former Russian politician and anti-corruption activist Alexei Navalny is once again seen as a leading contender for the Nobel Peace Prize. She has frequently ranked among the favorites at online bookmakers and was one of 338 nominees for the 2025 award.

So far, however, Yulia Navalnaya has not managed to secure enough votes from the Nobel Peace Committee. Supporters are now asking whether this could finally be her year. Navalnaya’s work centers on carrying forward her late husband’s anti-corruption and pro-democracy campaign against the Kremlin.

Beyond her activism, Navalnaya has signaled that she intends to run for president of Russia if circumstances make a genuine election possible in the future.

Her political aim is to help build a free and democratic Russia. Currently in exile, she operates from an undisclosed location abroad due to the risk of retribution from President Vladimir Putin’s government.

Navalnaya has remained active in Russian opposition politics throughout 2026, including during Russia’s September State Duma elections. After Russia’s Supreme Court barred Yabloko, the country’s last openly anti-war party, from the federal ballot in August, Navalnaya urged Russians to vote against United Russia and supported opposition candidates through the Smart Voting strategy.

Following the September 2026 election, Navalnaya said the opposition’s political work would continue despite the results. Her latest public activity also includes continued criticism of European policy toward Russia and calls for greater pressure on the Kremlin.

On September 22, she criticized the European Union’s decision to remove Russian billionaires Alisher Usmanov and Mikhail Fridman from its sanctions list while extending the broader Russia sanctions regime.

She is also the current Chairwoman of the Human Rights Foundation (HRF) and the Advisory Board for the Anti-Corruption Foundation (FBK). Navalnaya recently discussed how she still hears Alexei’s voice and is encouraged to make it heard.

That being said, there doesn’t appear to be any value on Navalnaya’s odds to win the Nobel Peace Prize at +400. If she hasn’t won it the last few years when she was more involved in the media spotlight, I don’t have faith in her winning this year.

UNRWA (+500)

The UNRWA is once again considered a leading contender for the Nobel Peace Prize. Last year, the agency ranked among the top three favorites, and this spring it returned near the top of the betting boards for 2026.

However, after an initial wave of optimism about its chances, support faded in the betting markets. The organization was no longer seen as a serious contender by the time voting took place in Norway.

Founded in 1949, UNRWA is tasked with assisting Palestinian refugees in Gaza, the West Bank, Syria, Lebanon, and Jordan. Its humanitarian work spans healthcare, food assistance, education, and broader emergency relief.

As a result of the ongoing conflict between Israel and Palestine, UNRWA has been heavily involved in helping refugees. However, Israel and the Anti-Defamation League have accused the organization of employing members of Hamas and other terrorist groups.

Furthermore, the United States Congress filed a report in 2024 about wrongdoings. It goes as far as claiming that the UNRWA isn’t a refugee agency or international organization and presents a security threat to Israel and the United States. Senator Tom Cotton is also leading a push to have UNRWA lose access to UN funding.

In its latest detailed situation reporting, the agency said approximately 11,000 Palestinian UNRWA personnel continued providing services and assistance in Gaza. Furthermore, more than 4,000 Palestinian personnel were providing education, healthcare and other services in the West Bank.

UNRWA also reported that Israeli authorities continued preventing its international staff from entering Gaza and the West Bank and had blocked the agency from directly bringing humanitarian personnel and aid into Gaza since March 2025.

Still, similar to last year, I expect the UNRWA’s Nobel Peace Prize 2026 odds to deteriorate and not be considered a favorite late in the summer.

Pope Leo XIV (+800)

Several popes have been nominated for the Nobel Peace Prize, but none has ever won. Every pope since Benedict XV (1914-1922) has received at least one nomination. The Committee has never seemed eager to actually honor a pope, but Pope Francis, who died on April 21, 2025, probably came the closest.

I believe Pope Leo XIV has an even greater chance than Francis. One of the most progressive popes in recent memory, yet still broadly moderate, Leo XIV is likely to be under serious consideration. He has picked up where his predecessor left off and gone further, building a reputation as a progressive leader who subtly pushes against the Vatican’s historical grain.

Although the first American pope maintains the Catholic Church’s socially conservative teachings, Leo XIV has been outspoken in his support for migrants and refugees. He is also continuing to open more positions in the Vatican to women. Also, a champion of marginalized communities, he is exactly the kind of figure who should resonate strongly with the Nobel Committee in Norway.

Leo XIV has also been vocal about global conflicts. He condemned violence against protesters in Iran and has consistently opposed the broader conflict there. This stance drew the ire of President Trump and sparked a sharp response from the pope, who insisted he carries a message of peace and will not waver in denouncing war.

Leo XIV has continued to emphasize diplomacy and peace as the Nobel announcement approaches. On September 6, he renewed his appeal for an end to the violence in Ukraine, calling for an end to destruction and for negotiations to create space for diplomacy.

His focus on displaced people has also remained prominent. In a message for the September 27 World Day of Migrants and Refugees, Leo XIV called for greater protection of migrant and refugee children, including family reunification and stronger safeguards for their rights and dignity.

Leo has also continued addressing peace beyond traditional military conflicts. In September, he backed greater interfaith dialogue amid tensions caused by conflicts in the Middle East, with the Vatican reaffirming opposition to both antisemitism and Islamophobia. He has additionally promoted artificial intelligence as a potential tool for dialogue and peace, arguing that its development should be guided by human dignity and used to strengthen connections between people.

The Vatican’s diplomatic efforts have also continued. Cardinal Matteo Zuppi, serving as the pope’s envoy, was reported in September to be preparing for another visit to Russia to discuss humanitarian issues connected to the war in Ukraine.

Trump’s frustration with the Nobel Committee has been well documented, especially after he failed to win the Peace Prize last year. If Leo XIV were to win in 2026, Trump’s outbursts would likely be intense and frequent. From a betting perspective, though, Leo XIV is worth a close look at +800 odds.

International Court of Justice (+800)

The International Court of Justice (ICJ) is another major contender for the Nobel Peace Prize, with its role as the United Nations’ principal judicial organ putting it at the center of some of the world’s most consequential international disputes.

The Court is responsible for settling legal disputes between states and providing advisory opinions on questions of international law.

The ICJ has attracted particular attention because of its involvement in cases related to the Israel-Palestine conflict. Its proceedings have placed international law, civilian protection and states’ obligations under international treaties at the center of global discussions about the war in Gaza.

The Court has also handled cases involving Russia’s invasion of Ukraine and other major international disputes. Its potential impact extends beyond individual rulings, as its cases can establish important interpretations of international law and the obligations of states.

The ICJ has remained highly active on international disputes throughout 2026. The Court marked its 80th anniversary in April, commemorating eight decades since its establishment as the principal judicial organ of the United Nations.

The Court’s work involving Gaza has continued to generate international attention. On September 18, Colombia withdrew its declaration of intervention in the case concerning the application of the Genocide Convention in the Gaza Strip, brought by South Africa against Israel. The ICJ formally announced the development on September 22.

The ICJ has also been dealing with a separate case brought by Nicaragua against Germany concerning alleged breaches of international obligations relating to the occupied Palestinian territory.

Public hearings on Germany’s preliminary objections took place from September 7-10, with the Court expected to issue its decision on those objections at a later date. Germany has asked the Court to dismiss the case, while Nicaragua argues that Germany’s provision of military equipment to Israel breached its obligations under international law.
