Nobel Prize in Literature 2026 Betting Preview: Winner Odds, Predictions, & Best Bets

Can Xue (+500)

Xue enters the 2026 Nobel Prize in Literature race as the shortest-priced author at +500, continuing her status as one of the most prominent names in the market. The Chinese avant-garde writer has been a Nobel contender for several years, and her unconventional, dreamlike fiction has earned a strong international following.

There is also some fresh momentum around Xue’s work in 2026. Her novel Mother River was named a finalist for the 2026 Baifang Schell Prize in the Literature category, providing another recent accolade for the veteran author.

The English translation was completed by Karen Gernant and Chen Zeping, who have translated several of Xue’s works.

Xue has already established an impressive international resume. Love in the New Millennium was longlisted for the 2019 International Booker Prize, while I Live in the Slums received another International Booker longlisting in 2021. Her work has also received recognition from the Best Translated Book Awards.

Her distinctive style remains one of the biggest reasons she continues to attract Nobel speculation. Xue’s fiction often blends surrealism, dreams, and unconventional narrative structures with observations rooted in Chinese society and culture. That makes her work quite different from the more traditional literary styles represented by some other Nobel contenders.

The attention is still going strong in September, with The Believer recently featuring Xue in its series examining the leading candidates for the 2026 Nobel Prize in Literature. At +500, however, bettors are paying a premium for that reputation.

The price gives Xue an implied probability of 16.7%, meaning the market still sees plenty of uncertainty despite making her the favorite. Her recent recognition with Mother River strengthens the case for considering her again, but it doesn’t necessarily make +500 attractive value.

I’m still inclined to look elsewhere at this price. Xue has the credentials and current momentum to remain near the top of the Nobel market, but bettors can find more attractive prices among the longer shots.

Haruki Murakami (+600)

Haruki Murakami remains one of the biggest names near the top of the 2026 Nobel Prize in Literature market, with his odds now sitting at +600. That gives the celebrated Japanese novelist an implied probability of 14.3%, putting him firmly among the leading contenders.

Murakami also enters this year’s race with a significant new piece of work. On July 3, 2026, he released The Tale of KAHO, his first full-length novel in three years.

The 352-page novel centers on a 26-year-old picture-book author and marks the first time Murakami has written a novel with a woman as the sole protagonist. The story retains his familiar surreal and mysterious elements while offering a somewhat different perspective from his previous novels.

The new book adds to an already remarkable international portfolio. Murakami’s novels, including Norwegian Wood, 1Q84 and The City and Its Uncertain Walls, have been translated into more than 50 languages. He has also won the Franz Kafka Prize, World Fantasy Award, and Hans Christian Andersen Literature Award.

There have been additional accolades since the last Nobel cycle. In December 2025, Murakami received the Japan Society Award in New York for his contributions to cultural exchange between Japan and the United States. He also received the 2025 Lifetime of Excellence in Fiction Award from The Center for Fiction.

The timing of The Tale of KAHO is particularly interesting for Nobel bettors. Murakami has been one of the most frequently discussed Nobel candidates for years, and now he has a major new novel and fresh recognition for his work heading into the 2026 award. I think that there is finally a chance that Murakami will hear his name called by the Swedish Academy.

Anne Carson (+600)

At +600 odds to win the Nobel Prize in Literature, the Canadian poet has an implied probability of 14.3%, putting her alongside Haruki Murakami near the top of the betting market.

Carson’s case received another boost since last year’s Nobel cycle. Her 2024 collection, Wrong Norma, won the 2025 National Book Critics Circle Award for Poetry, adding another major honor to an already extraordinary career. The book was also a finalist for the 2024 National Book Award for Poetry.

The Toronto-born poet is renowned for combining poetry, essays, translation, and classical scholarship. Her previous honors include a MacArthur Fellowship, Guggenheim Fellowship, Lannan Literary Award, two Griffin Poetry Prizes and the 2021 PEN/Nabokov Award for Achievement in International Literature.

There is also new work on the horizon. Carson’s current New York Review of Books author page lists Highlights of Colonialism for publication in 2027, meaning another major project is already in the pipeline as she continues her literary career.

Carson’s writing is undoubtedly unconventional, combining classical references, philosophy, poetry, and fragmented prose in ways that can challenge readers. That distinctive style has nevertheless earned her considerable recognition from critics and literary institutions around the world.

Expect Carson to be right there at the end, next to Murakami and Xue in the voting.
