With just over 24 hours before post time, Renegade (+450) is the betting favorite at top horse racing betting sites. At +450, Todd Pletcher’s Renegade has a 18.2% implied probability to win the “Fastest Two Minutes in Sports”, which is down from 21.1% earlier this week.
Behind Renegade, a handful of contenders are firmly in the mix. Commandment (+500), Further Ado (+550), and Chief Wallabee (+700) make up the second tier of Kentucky Derby hopefuls. As the second favorite, Commandment carries a 16.7% implied chance, followed closely by Further Ado at 15.4%.
Chief Wallabee (+700), The Puma (+900), and So Happy (+1000) are the other four runners with odds shorter than +1000. Emerging Market (+1100) and Danon Bourboun (+1600) headline the longer shots, but I believe there’s better value to be found elsewhere in the field. 152nd Kentucky Derby Betting Favorites
The Kentucky Derby 2026 odds indicate that we should have a wide-open race at Churchill Downs! Let’s check out the top favorites and analyze each runner’s chance on May 2:
Renegade (+450)
Robert Low’s Renegade is in peak form and appears to be improving with every start. He’s hitting his best stride at exactly the right time, and he clearly checks the “peaking before the Derby” box.
After finishing 3rd, 2nd, and 2nd in his first three outings, the $975,000 colt has rolled off three straight wins. Most recently, he dominated the Arkansas Derby (G1) by four lengths, punching his ticket to the Kentucky Derby starting gate at Churchill Downs.

That Arkansas Derby effort was his strongest to date, earning a 107-speed figure. It marks the fastest race of his career and continues a sharp upward trend: he opened with a 66 on debut, then progressed to 83, 93, 100, and finally 107 in his next four starts.
Renegade has only two graded stakes attempts so far: the emphatic win in the Arkansas Derby (G1) and a runner-up finish in the Remsen Stakes (G2). In the Remsen at Aqueduct last December, he battled on gamely to the wire but fell two lengths short in his graded debut.
The Kentucky Derby will be his first start over the Churchill Downs surface. Ideally, you’d like to see at least one prior race over the track, but he arrives in such strong form that he’s entitled to run a big one.
Even so, given how the race is shaping up and his post position on the rail, there are more attractive value options than Renegade in the Kentucky Derby win odds.
Commandment (+500)
Brad Cox is seeking the second Kentucky Derby win of his career with Commandment. His first and only Derby victory came in 2021 with Mandaloun. Cox has trained several horses capable of winning on the first Saturday in May, and Commandment looks like another one in that mold.
Commandment comes into the Derby red-hot, riding a four-race win streak and victory in four of his five career starts. After finishing fourth in his debut, he rattled off four straight wins, capped by his most recent score in the Florida Derby (G1).
In that race, the three-year-old dug in late to prevail by a nose over The Puma, showing real determination through the stretch to secure the $1 million prize at Gulfstream Park. That followed a strong performance in the Fountain of Youth Stakes (G2), where he won by a neck and posted the highest speed figure of his career.

Commandment earned a 99-speed rating in the Fountain of Youth, just shy of the triple-digit mark already reached by Renegade. On the plus side, he has experience at Churchill Downs, having won there on November 1. While that race didn’t come against the deepest field, it does give him some familiarity with the surroundings.
There are clear positives with Commandment’s profile, top connections, strong recent form, and proven grit in graded stakes. I also believe he’ll like this distance.
However, when it comes to Kentucky Derby betting value, there are likely other runners in the field who will offer a more attractive price relative to their chances of winning.
Further Ado (+550)
Cox has two great opportunities to win the Kentucky Derby in 2026. He has the futures favorite in his stable, along with Further Ado, who is on the heels of an outstanding performance in the Toyota Blue Grass Stakes (G1).
If Further Ado can duplicate that last outing, he’s going to be a handful in the stretch. He posted the fastest Blue Grass Stakes time since 2021, even quicker than Sierra Leone, one of the most highly touted horses in the 2024 Kentucky Derby.

Further Ado dominated, drawing off by 11 lengths over Ottinho while gearing down early in the stretch. Most importantly, he still had plenty left in the tank and clearly could have done even more if asked.
That win came with a 107-speed figure, his second career number of 105 or higher. His recent form is rock solid: 1st, 2nd, 1st, 1st in his last four starts, highlighted by a 1 ¾–length victory in the Kentucky Jockey Club Stakes (G2).
As Derby Day approaches, I expect money to show for Further Ado. However, his post position at 18 should keep his odds high enough to provide value. Two horses have won from the 18th post position, with Country House the most recent in 2019.
That said, at +550, the value on Further Ado looks very appealing, making him a strong option among the best Kentucky Derby bets.
Top Kentucky Derby 2026 Longshot Picks
For your Kentucky Derby best bets, we recommend including two or three upset picks to win! There is some juicy value on the board, so let’s dive right into my sleeper picks:
-
Potente (+2000)
Potente may still have his best to come for trainer Bob Baffert. Lightly raced and clearly on the upswing, he heads to Churchill Downs looking like a colt who could be ready to peak in the Kentucky Derby.
A $2.4 million auction purchase, Potente was bred and bought with major races in mind. In three career starts, he’s hinted at that kind of ceiling for Baffert, opening his career with back‑to‑back wins, capped by a sharp score in the San Felipe Stakes (G2).
In the San Felipe, Potente out-finished Robusta by a head at generous odds, suggesting there’s more under the hood when the pressure is on. He then validated that effort in the Santa Anita Derby (G1), staying on strongly to finish second, 2 ¾ lengths behind So Happy, in one of the deepest fields of the spring.
Now hovering around +2000 (down from +2500 earlier in the week) in Kentucky Derby wagering, Potente offers intriguing value as a win candidate. He already owns graded-stakes credentials, has powerhouse connections, and gives the impression of a colt with another forward move in him on the first Saturday in May.
-
Incredibolt (+2500)
Look out for Incredibolt as a live longshot in the 2026 Kentucky Derby. Trainer Riley Mott has done a terrific job bringing him along, and I fully expect Incredibolt to be involved when they straighten for the stretch.
He’ll need a few things to go his way to actually win, but he’s very likely to be in the mix. Incredibolt comes in red-hot, having won three straight, including a 4-length romp over Grittiness in the Virginia Derby in March.
Crucially, he’s already shown he likes Churchill Downs. Incredibolt owns two wins over this surface, highlighted by a Grade 3 score in the Street Sense Stakes (G3). While he failed to make an impact in the Holy Bull, his Virginia Derby effort suggests that race was more of a blip than a trend.
His recent workouts back up the form, with two of his last three drills stopping the clock in under 48 seconds. With current form, proven track affinity, and sharp morning moves, there’s genuine value in taking a shot on an Incredibolt win bet in this year’s Kentucky Derby.
Kentucky Derby 2026 Best Bets
Let’s conclude our analysis with the top Kentucky Derby bets! Continue reading to learn about my top Kentucky Derby winner pick and trifecta for the $5 million race at Churchill Downs.
2026 Kentucky Derby Winner Best Bet
The Derby is shaping up to be a wide-open race, with no clear standout expected to draw off in the stretch. Instead, we’re looking at a deep, competitive field that should deliver a highly entertaining renewal. I don’t see a Triple Crown winner in this group, but I do expect a compelling Derby.
From a betting standpoint, it’s hard to ignore Further Ado at +550 in the futures market. That’s a generous price on a horse coming in with plenty of confidence and momentum. In my view, Further Ado deserves to be around +500.
I rate him closer to Renegade than to any other horse in the starting gate, even ahead of Commandment, who currently has the second-best price. That effectively boosts Brad Cox’s chances of securing his second Kentucky Derby victory. The version of Further Ado we saw in the Blue Grass was the most impressive recent performance I’ve watched from this crop.
There’s no guarantee he reproduces that exact effort, but I’m confident he can run to a similar level. As my top pick to win the Kentucky Derby, Further Ado sits atop my tickets at a very appealing +550.
Best Kentucky Derby 2026 Trifecta Bet
To cash a horse racing trifecta, bettors must correctly predict the horses that will finish 1st, 2nd, and 3rd in exact order. It’s a tough wager to hit, but it can turn a small stake into a serious score.
With Further Ado as my key horse, I’m locking him into the top spot to finish 1st. His price offers a strong return on a straight win bet and even better value as the anchor in a trifecta.
I’m also bullish on The Puma delivering a strong performance. Despite coming up short in the Florida Derby, he showed key progress heading into the Derby. I expect him to fall just short of the winner’s circle, but he’s a prime candidate to fill the 2nd-place slot.
To round things out, I’m taking a swing with longshot Potente in 3rd. If he hits the board as expected, he’ll blow up the Kentucky Derby trifecta payout and turn this ticket into a potential windfall.
