FIFA World Cup Group A winner odds suggest one of the three host countries, Mexico, has the upper hand. But can they make their advantage count against South Korea, Czechia, and South Africa?
I’ll take a look at the opening group for this tournament, and give you my FIFA World Cup Group A winner prediction at the end!
FIFA World Cup Group A Winner Odds
| TEAM | ODDS |
|---|---|
| Mexico | -125 |
| South Korea | +310 |
| Czechia | +320 |
| South Africa | +1200 |
The FIFA World Cup Group A winner odds have Mexico (-125) at the top of the board at World Cup sportsbooks, with an implied probability of 55.6% to top the group. “El Tri” hasn’t made it out of their group since 2018, and winning it would be a good start!
South Korea (+310) and Czechia (+320) are battling for second in the FIFA World Cup Group A winner odds, with South Africa (+1200) brings up the rear.
Can you find some value in these prices? I’ll analyze that below, but you can find these odds at Bovada by going to Sports > Soccer > FIFA World Cup Futures > Group Futures.
FIFA World Cup Group A Winner Favorites
Let’s break down the four teams you’ll find in Group A at the 2026 FIFA World Cup this summer, starting with the favorites on home soil!
Mexico (-125)
Mexico at -125 looks like a case where the FIFA World Cup Group A betting market may be giving too much credit to home-field advantage. Playing all of their matches at home gives them a clear benefit. They will be familiar with the stadiums, have support from local fans, and avoid long travel. However, these odds suggest Mexico will dominate the group, and that may not happen.
The call-up.

The biggest concern is scoring goals. Mexico’s defense is strong, and their Edson Alvarez-led midfield can control possession and set the pace of matches. But winning a group usually requires putting teams away and creating enough offense to earn comfortable victories. But outside of Raul Jimenez (who is 35 years old) and Santiago Gimenez, I don’t know where the goals are coming from.
If Mexico is winning games by only one goal or drawing against weaker teams, the value of playing at home becomes much less important. The -125 FIFA World Cup Group A odds imply about a 56% chance of winning the group, which feels a little high considering their attacking concerns.
In tournament play, teams that struggle to finish chances often run into problems. South Korea offers a more interesting betting option because of its ability to attack quickly and its experience in major tournaments. Mexico could still win the group, but these odds may be asking bettors to pay too much for home-field advantage.
FIFA World Cup Group A Winner Contenders
Next, we’ll look at two contenders, including one where you may find some betting value!
South Korea (+310)
South Korea at +310 is an interesting FIFA World Cup Group A betting option, but there are concerns about its defense. The team can be dangerous going forward, and its organized style helps keep matches under control. However, much of the defense depends on Kim Min-jae. If opponents find ways to avoid or isolate him, South Korea could have trouble stopping goals.

These FIFA World Cup Group A odds imply about a 24% chance of winning the group. That number may actually be a little generous because of the team’s defensive weaknesses. In group-stage play, keeping clean sheets is important, and South Korea has sometimes struggled against stronger opponents.
Because of this, the attack needs to perform at a high level in almost every match. The trio of Son Heung-min, Lee Kang0in, and Hwang Hee-chan is very talented. The team’s discipline helps cover some of its weaknesses, but tournaments can expose flaws quickly.
One poor defensive performance against a top team could leave South Korea needing results in later matches instead of controlling its own path. At +310, bettors are counting on everything going right. The attack must stay productive, and opponents must fail to take advantage of the defense. I do like the betting value you get with South Korea, though.

Czechia (+320)
Czechia at +320 may seem attractive at first, but a closer look raises questions about its offense. The team is known for strong defending and winning close games. That style can help during the group stage, but it does not always lead to finishing first in the group.

โ Czech Football National Team (@ceskarepre_eng) May 31, 2026
Patrik Schick is both Czechia’s biggest strength and biggest concern. When he is healthy and scoring goals, the team becomes much more dangerous. However, the attack depends heavily on him. If he gets injured or goes through a scoring slump, Czechia can struggle to create quality chances.
The betting market views Czechia as a serious contender, but the +320 odds may not fully reflect how little room for error this team has. Group winners usually need at least one convincing performance, and it is difficult to picture Czechia dominating opponents because of its cautious style and limited attacking depth.
The same defensive mindset that makes Czechia difficult to beat can also limit its upside. Betting on the Czechs means trusting Schick to carry much of the scoring load while the team collects enough points to finish first. That feels riskier than the odds suggest.
FIFA World Cup Group A Winner Longshot
Finally, this team needs a lot to go right to come out on top in Group A!
South Africa (+1200)
South Africa faces a difficult challenge in Group A, making these +1200 odds look more hopeful than realistic. The gap in talent between South Africa and the stronger teams in the group is significant. While goalkeeper Ronwen Williams is capable of producing outstanding performances, even an elite goalkeeper can only do so much.

Williams played a major role in helping South Africa stay competitive during qualification, but expecting him to carry the team through an entire group stage against stronger opponents is a tough task.
The team’s overall numbers are not very encouraging. South Africa lacks enough attacking firepower to consistently score against organized defenses, and its own defense will face pressure throughout the tournament. The +1200 FIFA World Cup Group A odds imply roughly a 7% chance of winning the group, which may actually be higher than their true chances.
The bookmakers are essentially pricing in a best-case scenario rather than a likely outcome. Bettors would probably be better off looking elsewhere.
South Korea offers a much stronger case because of its organized style of play and overall roster quality. Instead of hoping for a major upset, it may be wiser to focus on teams with more realistic paths to winning the group.
FIFA World Cup Group A Winner Prediction and Betting Pick
Mexico are deserving favorites, being at home. But I’m backing South Korea at +310 in my FIFA World Cup Group A winner predictions. I think they have the best attack in the group, and they are disciplined enough as a team that they can overcome their defensive issues at the back. I wouldn’t put too much into their FIFA World Cup winner odds as they’ll struggle against better teams. But I feel confident in their chances in the group.
Besides, the value is much better’s than Mexico, and you can get a good return here, so I’m taking South Korea at +310!
