The FIFA World Cup Group D odds are close at the top. The United States and Turkey are expected to fight for the top spot, but Paraguay and Australia can shake things up with their physical play.
Let’s check the latest FIFA World Cup Group D winner odds, before I give you my pick for who comes out on top!
FIFA World Cup Group D Winner Odds
| TEAM | ODDS TO WIN GROUP | ODDS TO PROGRESS |
|---|---|---|
| United States | +145 | -650 |
| Turkey | +155 | -450 |
| Paraguay | +375 | -200 |
| Australia | +850 | +100 |
The Americans (+145) are the FIFA World Cup Group D betting favorites with a 40.8% implied win probability. But Turkey (+155) is hot on their heels with a 39.2% win probability. These two have lots of players plying their trade at some of the biggest teams in Europe, but they also have their own issues.
Paraguay (+375) is next, followed by Australia (+850), and these two would need a shock win over the top two to have a chance to win Group D. Still, this might be the most competitive group in the entire tournament, when its all said and done.

USA – Can the Americans Soar on Home Soil?
The USA’s FIFA World Cup Group D odds seem attractive because they are playing at home and have a lot of athletic talent. However, this is a risky bet when you take a closer look at the squad.
One of the biggest issues is the team’s defense. Against strong opponents, defensive mistakes can be costly, and the USA has shown weaknesses in that area. Chris Richards is their best defender (outside of left back Antonee Robinson, who is actually great going forward). However, he suffered an ankle injury at the end of the club season and may not play.

Their goalkeeping situation is also uncertain, which adds more risk. In major tournaments, teams need dependable goalkeepers, and it’s unclear if the USA has that right now. Matt Turner is probably the #1 over Matt Freese, but neither of them inspires confidence.
The Americans do have talented players throughout the roster, and playing in front of home fans could give them an extra boost. Christian Pulisic, Weston McKennie, and the returning Gio Reyna can provide attacking nous. Tyler Adams is a also great box-to-box midfielder. and the crowd support may help them win close games.
Still, the +145 odds imply about a 41% chance of winning the group. That’s high considering their defensive concerns, so I prefer other options.
Turkey – Can The Crescent Stars Shine?
Turkey offers strong value at +155 in Group D, as I expected them to be favored at around even odds. Their midfield is filled with talented young players, such as Arda Güler and Kenan Yıldız. They like to play a possession-focused style that allows them to control games, led by midfield maestro Hakan Çalhanoğlu. Their technical ability helps them create chances and manage the pace of matches.

There are some concerns about their defense. Merih Demiral and Abdülkerim Bardakcı are strong, but they don’t have much pace. Fast teams can sometimes catch them on the counterattack, and they do not have a top-level goal scorer.
Because of that, they need to create many chances to score consistently. Kerem Aktürkoğlu will likely start as a striker, but he’s not a top-tier striker despite a 15-goal season at Fenerbahçe.
Even so, teams that control the midfield often perform well in tournaments. Turkey’s young core has the skill and confidence to compete with anyone in this group. If they play well, they’ll create enough chances to score, either from open play or set pieces.
At these FIFA World Cup Group D odds, Turkey appears undervalued. Their ability to dominate possession should help them wear down opponents, and their overall talent makes them a strong contender to finish first.

Paraguay – Will Los Guaranies Step Up?
Paraguay is a difficult team to evaluate at +375. They have a strong defense and enjoy a physical style of play, which can make life difficult for opponents. Gustavo Gómez and Fabián Balbuena are experienced center backs, even if they lack a bit of speed. However, there are concerns about their ability to score goals.

Outside of forward Julio Enciso and Miguel Almiron, Paraguay lacks creativity in attack. Their counterattacking style can be effective, but it often depends on staying organized defensively and taking advantage of limited opportunities. That approach can lead to too many draws in a group-stage tournament.
The +375 odds suggest about a 21% chance of winning the group. While the price may seem appealing, the concerns about their offense are hard to ignore. For Paraguay to finish first, their defense would need to perform at a very high level while their attack produces more goals than expected. That’s too many question marks for my taste, given the odds.
Australia – Can the Socceroos Shock the World?
Australia’s FIFA World Cup Group D odds are tempting, but the Socceroos face several challenges in Group D. Most notably, they lack the talent to compete with the rest.
Their defense is usually organized and physical, and they have typically been dangerous on set pieces. Goalkeeper Mat Ryan has a lot of experience, while center back Harry Souttar is a beast. However, they do not have a reliable goal scorer, which makes it difficult to win enough matches to top the group.

The midfield also lacks creativity, making it harder to break down well-organized defenses. As a result, Australia regularly depends on strong defending and scoring from corners or free kicks. At 6’6”, Souttar is frequently a target from set pieces.
While their defensive toughness gives them a chance to stay competitive, relying on low-scoring wins and set-piece goals is a difficult path to success. At +850, the odds are attractive, but the overall value is questionable.
FIFA World Cup Group D Prediction and Betting Pick
It’s between the Americans and Turkey, and I’m giving a slight edge to the Crescent Boys. I think Turkey is better defensively, and if Güler and Yıldız play up to their potential, the team will be in control of most games in this group stage.
Turkey also offers a slightly higher return than the United States, and I believe it’s worth the risk. Let’s take Turkey in our FIFA World Cup Group D betting picks.
