2026 Men’s NCAA Sweet 16 Betting Preview: Predictions, Best Bets, & Odds

Illinois Fighting Illini vs. Houston Cougars: Houston -2.5 (-113)

Illinois and Houston clash in what should be one of the most entertaining games in the Sweet 16, and it’s a true contrast in styles. Houston wants a physical, grinding game built on aggressive defense, while Illinois is at its best when it spreads the floor, uses screens, and lets its shooters attack in space.

The big question is whether Brad Underwood’s system can land a meaningful blow against Kelvin Sampson’s well-coached Cougars. Since Sampson took over more than a decade ago, Houston has been one of the best defensive programs in college basketball, and this year is no different.

Houston comes in with the No. 1 scoring defense in the nation, allowing just 62.3 points per game. The Cougars are also third in defensive efficiency, putting them well ahead of Illinois on that side of the ball. The Illini, by comparison, rank only 71st in defensive efficiency and give up 69.4 points per game, which is 53rd nationally in the NCAA.

And while Houston’s reputation is built on defense, it’s not as if they’re limited offensively. The Cougars average 77.5 points per game and sit 36th in offensive efficiency, more than enough scoring when paired with their physical style. Against an Illinois defense that can be a bit soft, that two-way balance could be a real problem.

Houston typically rolls out a three-guard attack featuring star freshman Kingston Flemings alongside veterans Milos Uzan and Emanuel Sharp. In the paint, freshman Chris Cenac Jr. continues to grow into his role as an interior presence. That mix of seasoned leadership and athletic freshmen gives this team upside that likely wasn’t fully tapped in the regular season.

Their recent form suggests they’re hitting their stride at the right time. After destroying Idaho 78-47 and Texas A&M 88-52, Houston looks every bit like a team built for March. Sampson’s system tends to travel well this time of year, and that defense should make life difficult for Illinois’ perimeter shooters. When the Illini aren’t knocking down threes, they become a very beatable team.

Given Houston’s elite defense, balanced offense, and current momentum, the Cougars as a short favorite stand out as one of my best Sweet 16 betting picks.

Iowa Hawkeyes vs. Nebraska Cornhuskers: Iowa +3 (-115)

In a Big Ten rivalry matchup, the Iowa Hawkeyes and Nebraska Cornhuskers meet in the Sweet 16 at the Toyota Center. It’s a physical, Midwest battle that should feature plenty of toughness and chippiness.

These teams know each other well. They’ve met twice this season, and both games went down to the wire. Iowa won 57-52 in February, while Nebraska answered earlier this month with an 84-75 victory. Despite the nine-point margin, that second meeting was tied after regulation, with Iowa in control before squandering a late lead. The Hawkeyes were inches away from a regular-season sweep.

Iowa has consistently held its own in the trenches. In the first matchup, the Hawkeyes collected 13 more rebounds, and they again finished plus-three on the glass when they closed the regular season on March 8. Their scrappy defense has caused problems all year, including for Nebraska.

Defensively, Iowa ranks 15th nationally at 66 points allowed per game and has held its last four opponents to 72 points or fewer. That’s notable given a recent schedule that included a Round of 32 date with Florida. The Hawkeyes limited the Gators to just 31 points in the first half and ultimately handed Florida the tournament’s only No. 1 seed loss so far.

Nebraska can grind games down as well. The Cornhuskers rank 12th nationally, just ahead of Iowa, allowing 65.8 points per game. Offensively, there’s very little separation: Nebraska averages 77.1 points per game, while Iowa is right behind at 75. With both teams navigating similar Big Ten schedules, strength of competition doesn’t tip the scales in either direction.

Given the familiarity and how tight the first two meetings were, it’s difficult to envision Nebraska pulling away. Expect another close contest decided by a single possession late in the second half. For my NCAA Tournament Sweet 16 best bets, the value lies with Iowa plus the points.

Tennessee Volunteers vs. Iowa State Cyclones: Iowa St. -4 (-110)

On the heels of a blowout win over the Kentucky Wildcats, the Iowa State Cyclones will look to knock off a second straight SEC opponent in the NCAA Tournament. They dismantled Kentucky 82-63 in the Round of 32 after opening March Madness with a 108-74 rout of Tennessee Tech.

Iowa State dominated Kentucky despite being without forward Joshua Jefferson, who was injured in the opening round. While he hasn’t officially been ruled out for the Sweet 16, it’s looking doubtful that he’ll be available against Tennessee. Even so, the Cyclones showed they can thrive without him, thanks to Tamin Lipsey and Milan Momcilovic shooting the lights out.

Lipsey poured in 26 points on 8-of-15 shooting, while Momcilovic added 20 points on 6-of-12 from the field and caught fire from three. Jefferson’s absence certainly hurts, but Iowa State has enough depth and talent to absorb his production, especially when Momcilovic is dialed in from beyond the arc.

It’s also a testament to T.J. Otzelberger’s system. This group plays unselfishly and shares the ball at a high level, ranking near the top of the country with 17.4 assists per game. That ball movement has powered an offense averaging 82.5 points per game and sitting 11th nationally in offensive efficiency, a clear edge over Tennessee, which ranks just 46th in that category.

The Cyclones, however, aren’t just about scoring. They’re one of the best defensive teams in the nation, and that often gets overlooked. Their length and activity should give Tennessee all kinds of problems in the Sweet 16. Iowa State allows only 65.4 points per game, 10th nationally, and ranks fourth in defensive efficiency. The Volunteers lag behind there as well in 36th.

The predictive metrics back up the edge. Iowa State rates sixth in the NET rankings, while Tennessee is down at 20th. Jefferson’s injury is worth noting, but the Cyclones are far from a one-man team. Realistically, this line would likely be around -6.5 with a fully healthy Jefferson, which suggests we’re getting some built-in value on Iowa State here.
