FIFA World Cup Group J Betting Preview: Odds, Analysis, and Predictions

Argentina is understandably favored in the FIFA World Cup Group J odds, as “La Albiceleste” prepares for their title defense. Is an upset looming among Austria, Algeria, and Jordan.

Let’s take a look at the World Cup Group J odds, and find your best bet for this group!

FIFA World Cup Group J Winner Odds

TEAM ODDS TO WIN GROUP ODDS TO PROGRESS
Argentina -325 -5000
Austria +350 -600
Algeria +850 -260
Jordan +5000 +280

Argentina (-325) sits at the top of top World Cup sportsbooks online in Group J with an implied probability of 76.5%. This probability seems low, considering their talent level. While there are concerns about their title defense, they should be fine for Group J.

Austria (+350) is next, followed by Algeria (+850). Their meeting on the final Group J matchday on June 27th could decide who finishes second.
Jordan (+5000) has just a 2% implied probability in their maiden World Cup voyage. “The Chivalrous Ones” are just aiming to give a good account of themselves in North America.

Argentina – Can "La Albiceleste" Defend Their Crown?

Argentina enters this tournament as the defending World Cup champion. Their World Cup Group J odds of -325 show that they are the clear favorite to win the group. This price seems fair because Argentina brought back 17 players who won the World Cup in 2022.

Lionel Messi is now 38 years old, and he’ll be 39 on June 24th. However, he remains one of the best playmakers in the world and can still impact games at the highest level.

Argentina’s strength goes beyond Messi. The team has a deep and talented midfield, led by Enzo Fernández and Alexis Mac Allister, that can control possession, create scoring chances, and manage the pace of games. They no longer depend on one player to carry the team. Julian Alvarez and Lautaro Martinez are also world-class players that can take some scoring burden off Messi. This is important for their FIFA World Cup winner odds.

There are some concerns about injuries in defense and a lack of speed at the back. Cristian Romero and Lisandro Martínez both had injuries this season, and Nicolas Otamendi is 38 years old. However, these weaknesses are less likely to be exposed during the group stage. Argentina’s experience and strong organization usually help them overcome these issues.

Austria – Can Rangnick Get "The Team" to the Knockout Phase?

Austria enters the group with World Cup Group J odds of +350. While they have some strengths, there are also several concerns that make them a risky pick.

Coach Ralf Rangnick has Austria playing an aggressive, high-pressing style. Their midfield, powered by Konrad Laimer and Marcel Sabitzer, is talented, but the injury to Christoph Baumgartner hurts their attack. Losing an important creative player makes it harder to score goals and create chances. This is especially true when their probable starting striker, Marko Arnautovic, is 37 years old. Age is another issue that could come up as defender David Alaba is 33 and has battled injuries for years, and Sabitzer is 32.

Austria’s experience is helpful, but experience alone does not win matches. Teams still need to finish their opportunities. Their pressing system can cause problems for weaker teams, but it also requires a lot of energy. Against skilled opponents, Austria may struggle if teams, such as Argentina, play through the press.

Depth is another concern. In a tournament, players need rest and injuries can happen. Austria does not have many quality replacements available.

At +350, the odds seem reasonable, but there is little room for mistakes. Austria should finish second in the group, but they could also finish lower if things do not go their way.

Algeria – Can Mahrez Inspire "The Greens"?

Algeria has odds of +850 to win Group J. While the price may seem attractive, there are several reasons for caution.

The team relies heavily on Riyad Mahrez to create scoring opportunities. Although Algeria has some speed and attacking talent on the wings, depending too much on one player can become a problem during a tournament. Keep an eye on their attack down the left behind fullback Rayan Ait-Nouri and winger Mohamed Amoura. This could take some pressure off Mahrez.

Another concern is the age of many key players, such as Mahrez at 35, and defenders Aissa Mandi and Ramy Bensebaini at 34, respectively. Experience is valuable, but older players can struggle when matches are played close together.

The decision to leave midfielder Ismaël Bennacer off the squad also raises questions about depth and control in midfield. He did have injuries this season, but I think he was worth getting bringing to North America. In addition, Algeria’s goalkeeping situation remains uncertain. Poor goalkeeping can quickly end a team’s hopes in a major tournament. Luca Zidane (Zinedine’s son) is favored to get the gloves, but he doesn’t inspire confidence.

The FIFA World Cup Group J odds suggest Algeria is not expected to challenge seriously for first place in the group. While surprises can happen, their defensive concerns and reliance on individual talent make them a difficult team to trust.

Jordan – Will Jordan Have a Respectable World Cup Debut?

Jordan enters Group J as a major underdog with odds of +5000. While they have some strengths, the gap in talent between them and the other teams is significant in their first-ever World Cup.

Forward Mousa Al-Taamari gives Jordan a dangerous attacking option, and the team is usually organized defensively because they have to be. However, they often struggle to score goals, unless Ali Olwan has a good tournament. Having one talented attacker is not enough against stronger opponents.

Jordan also lacks depth. In a tournament, teams need quality players on the bench to handle injuries, fatigue, and tactical changes. Jordan just does not have the same level of talent as the other teams in the group.

Their defensive discipline may help them stay competitive in matches, but winning games requires scoring goals. That is where Jordan faces its biggest challenge.

The +5000 odds reflect how difficult it will be for Jordan to win the group. They would need everything to go perfectly while several stronger teams underperform. Because of that, they remain a very unlikely winner of Group J.

FIFA World Cup Group J Prediction and Betting Pick

It would be a small miracle if any team other than Argentina won here, which is why they’re my World Cup Group J winner prediction. Messi is working his way back from a hamstring injury, but Argentina could take it easy with their talisman.

But the -325 price doesn’t entice me. Instead, I’ll take the Group Winner and To Finish Bottom market, where Argentina 1st and Jordan 4th is -110. This is much better value, so that’s where my wager is going!
