It was a big weekend of racing at Gulfstream Park, with Life Is Good the $3,000,000 winner and Colonel Liam a $1,000,000 winner on the turf. The $20,000,000 Saudi Cup is the biggest race up next on February 26. It is a two-day event, with the main draw worth $20,000,000 in the middle east.

Next weekend the feature event is the $250,000 Withers Stakes (Gr. 3) at Aqueduct Racetrack, $250,000 Holy Bull Stakes (Gr. 3) at Gulfstream Park, and then the $250,000 Bayakoa Stakes (Gr. 3) at Oaklawn Park. For Monday, we’re at Turf Paradise and Parx in Philadelphia.

Parx has 11 races worth $286,000 in prize money on the card. Head below for our best Parx Racing picks on January 31, 2022.

Distance:1 Mile 70 Yards
Purse:$20,000

The second race at Parx covers a mile and 70 yards for a $20,000 purse. Monster Rising and Speighster’s Gold should have a big showing in this grade.

Monster Rising is a one-time winner through 12 assignments. She’s finished 1st, 3rd, 6th in her previous three events.

It was a solid go for Monster Rising three races back, with a win by a head for a $27,195 prize. Following that win, she showed 3rd in a $20,000 purse on December 22.

Following that decent display, Monster Rising was 6th in a $20,000 race. Heading in the wrong direction, Speighster’s Gold should be dangerous with Monster Rising regressing.

Speighster’s Gold is 1 for 14 in her career, finishing 4th, 2nd, 2nd in her last three outings. Most recently, Speighster’s Gold placed 2nd behind Wonder City by a half-length in a $20,000 purse on January 18.

Before that effort, he placed 2nd behind Cooper Penny by 2 ¼ lengths for $20,000. If she can find just a bit more kick in the stretch, Speighster’s Gold should clear with ease.

(4) Excitable Lady

(5) Hay Buck

(6) Tomarie
+500 (5/1)
(7) Lula’s Roadrunner
+160 (8/5)

Post Time: 2:40 p.m. EST
Distance: 1 Mile
Purse:$35,000

Race 6 is a mile race on the dirt for a $35,000 purse. Give Akna and Lula’s Roadrunner a solid look to win the top prize.

Akna is coming off a productive run on November 2 to beat Takeittocommitte by 2 ¾ lengths in a $25,000 event. That was a good trip from Akna after finishing 5th, 3rd, 2nd in his previous three.

Before the win, Akna placed 2nd behind Hay Nineteen by 1 ½ lengths for a $25,000 purse. We’ll see if the improvement will continue, this time up in class at the $35,000 level.

Lula’s Roadrunner is 4 for 24 in her career and has looked in good form since September. She has finished 2nd, 1st, 3rd, 2nd, 2nd in her last five attempts.

Lula’s Roadrunner most recently placed 2nd behind Cartouche by ¾ lengths for a $35,000 prize. This was after placing 2nd behind Billieanne a month earlier in the same grade.

The mare had a blowout win for a $22,000 purse four races ago, so it was time to get up in class. She’s coming close for a $35,000 purse and should find the edge on Monday afternoon.

Race 10

(1) Powerful Ally
+500 (5/1)
(2) Manahawkin
+1500 (15/1)
(3) Jamminwithbrandon
+600 (6/1)
(4) Monte Ne
+2000 (20/1)
(5) Street Tail
+600 (6/1)
(6) Sevier
+160 (8/5)
(7) Puttheglassdown
+400 (4/1)
(8) Royal Blue Roy
+1000 (10/1)
(9) Jw’s Third Mischief
+800 (8/1)

Post Time: 4:28 p.m. EST
Distance:5 ½ Furlongs
Purse:$28,000

Race 10 is a $28,000 event covering 5 ½ furlongs on the dirt. Puttheglassdown and Sevier should have a strong push in the stretch run.

Puttheglassdown is 7 for 32 and has finished 1st, 1st, 1st, 5th in his last four races. He was rolling right along before losing on December 27 in a $65,000 event.

That was an ill-advised jump in class, as his attempt for a fourth straight win came well short. He was a $28,000 winner by a head for a purse on November 9.

Back down to this grade, consider a play on Puttheglassdown. I expect him to have a decent enough chance in this one.

Sevier is 20 for 51 in his career and has been a model of consistency. He’s finished 1st, 1st, 2nd, 1st, 1st, 1st in his previous six outings.

In his last race, Sevier beat La Waun by 6 lengths for a $65,000 purse. That was awfully impressive after a $28,000 win by a half-length on December 7.

It’s hard not to see Sevier as the top contender to win given his recent form.
