A huge NFC Championship clash will unfold in the early window on Sunday afternoon as the surprising Brock Purdy and the 49ers head to Philadelphia to do battle with Jalen Hurts and the Eagles. While neither squad was really expected to be competing in this game back in September, both teams have caught fire at precisely the right moment, and have been receiving excellent defensive play down the stretch.

And though the Niners lost two starting QB’s in this league, their coaching and organisational depth has continued to shine through. The Eagles enter with a healthy Jalen Hurts, and his dual-threat ability will be key in stifling the 49ers’ NFL best 12-game win streak. This is as complete a football team as there is in the NFL right now, and they’ll enter Sunday’s showdown winners of 12-straight
games.

Philly completely dominated the Giants at home last week, showing their strength in the process. They were lethal through the air, and relentless on defense. The pressure the Philadelphia defensive front can bring will surely test Brock Purdy on Sunday – something that hasn’t really occurred in his first few pro starts to date.

For San Francisco, Brock Purdy continues to prove that he is capable of a starting role in the NFL. He’s been accurate on his throws, and along with great play-calling and support around him, Purdy has been able to thrive in limited action thus far. That said, he’s going to face a solid defensive gameplan from Philadelphia, and how he handles it will dictate this game. He showed some weaknesses last week vs. Dallas, and will need to make more plays in the NFC Championship.

For further insight on this crucial showdown to send one lucky NFC franchise to this year’s Super Bowl, keep on reading on beneath the posted odds for a full matchup preview, trends, and the latest information to help you make an informed decision for this playoff matchup between the Philadelphia Eagles and San Francisco 49ers.

Philadelphia Eagles vs. San Francisco 49ers Prediction

As good as the 49ers’ defense has been of late, they haven’t faced a unit as prolific as the Philadelphia Eagles at full strength. Jalen Hurts has returned from his injury and looks completely healed and rejuvenated. He’s been elite in every sense, and that should continue on Sunday.

Hurts is lucky to play behind one of the league’s best offensive lines, and with Lane Johnson, the Eagles’ offensive blockers simply don’t give up much pressure. The Niners’ stop unit is predicated on pressuring the opposing QB, but it’s the Eagles that should have the edge. They’ve been awesome all season, and this unit should continue to give Hurts time and space to survey downfield.

Hurts is also very quick, shifty, and elusive when he leaves the pocket. And though the Niners’ defense can be quite tough to break down, they haven’t defended QB’s when they leave the pocket all that well in 2023. Hurts’ mobility should be a strength in this one.

Downfield, the San Francisco corner play has also recently appeared to be the weak spot of their roster. They’ve been torched by prolific receivers in recent weeks, but have managed to stay afloat. The Eagles have two legitimate stars at the wideout position, and both Devonta Smith and AJ Brown should be able to get open, and win their matchups. If the Eagles want to go with the long-ball, and air it out – this offense should keep the chains moving.

On the other side of the ball, Brock Purdy is going to have his hands full in dealing with the Philadelphia defense, and the pressure they can bring. Philly is steady in its secondary, and should really be able to bottle up and clamp down on Christian McCaffrey, who isn’t at 100%. With Elijah Mitchell also sidelined, Brock Purdy is going to be counted upon to make more plays than he’s ever had to. While George Kittle should be able to find space among the Philly linebackers, Purdy is going to feel hurried, and likely unable to make the downfield throws required to give San Fran a shot on Sunday. It’s been a nice story, but the road ends on Sunday in the City of Brotherly Love.

Eagles vs. 49ers Trends To Know:

  • 49ers are 10-2 ATS vs. a team with a winning record.
  • 49ers are 20-6 ATS in their last 26 vs. NFC.
  • Eagles are 6-2 ATS in their last 8 playoff games.
  • Eagles are 7-3 ATS in their last 10 home games.

The Eagles have been awesome at home, and Lincoln Financial Field should prove to be quite the hostile atmosphere for rookie QB Brock Purdy and the visiting 49ers. San Francisco is going to really struggle to move the football, while the Eagles’ offense matches up quite well with the Niners’ defense. Look for Hurts to utilize an effective passing game, en route to a convincing victory for the Super Bowl-bound Eagles.
