A potential playoff preview in the AFC will feature prominently during Week 9’s Sunday Night Football showdown as the Tennessee Titans travel to Arrowhead Stadium to do battle against Patrick Mahomes and the Kansas City Chiefs. And though both of these squads enter with identical 5-2 records, the betting markets indicate that there is still a fair bit separating these two teams.

The Chiefs enter Sunday night hovering around 13-point favourites on the point spread. That said, Mahomes and Kansas City have secured their five victories against a gauntlet of impressive teams, whereas the Titans can’t make the same claim. In fact, Tennessee’s five victories have come against teams with a combined 10-18-2 record, and with questions at the QB position, they remain very much a work in progress. Expect Ryan Tannehill to be inactive on Sunday, and Malik Willis to feature prominently in his absence.
New Chiefs’ WR Kadarius Toney has recovered from the grade 2 hamstring pull he suffered in week 2 while playing for the Giants. He could have played for KC last week, but the bye week gave him one more week to get healthy, and he will be active tonight vs. the Titans.

For Kansas City, Mahomes and this offense continue to thrive and add in new wrinkles to one of the sport’s best attacks. Kansas City leads the NFL in many offensive categories, and they enter as healthy and well-rested as they’ve been in weeks, given the fact they enter Week 9 coming off of their bye week. They’ve had some good battles in recent seasons against the Titans, and Sunday’s showdown should be no different.
#Titans RB Derrick. Henry is averaging 151.2 rush yards per game on the road in November or later since 2019, which is over 55 more than any other player.#Chiefs HC Andy Reid told me, “You obviously don’t want to let him get started. He gets going and he’s something special.”

With both of these squads priming for the post-season, a playoff matchup in 2023 seems quite likely. Derrick Henry remains one of the league’s top backs, and he’ll go against a stout Kansas City run defense. The Chiefs will look to extend their divisional lead within a tight race, and will look to avoid signs of rust following their long layoff. Tennessee Titans vs. Kansas City Chiefs Prediction: This is going to be a tough game for Malik Willis, but the Chiefs’ lack of game film against him, might prove to be an advantage for the young rookie QB. With Tannehill inactive, Willis will enter a hostile Sunday Night Football atmosphere in Kansas City. And while he has shown in limited action that he isn’t the best thrower – especially downfield, Willis’ legs can single-handedly move the chains. Kansas City is also quite prolific at getting to opposing QB’s, as is seen by their #2 ranking in terms of pressure rate.

Look for Tennessee to counter this with a steady dose of King Henry, as in Derrick Henry. The veteran power rusher is having another stellar campaign for the Titans, and the Chiefs have shown some vulnerability here of late. Josh Jacobs of the Raiders ran all over Kansas City a few weeks ago, and Derrick Henry is capable of keeping the Titans’ driving. Expect a lot of run plays from Mike Vrabel’s side on Sunday night. For the Chiefs, the power running attack of Tennessee might keep Mahomes and his offense off the field for long stretches, but the Kansas City Chiefs will still find a way to get their points. There’s simply too much skill all over the field, but the Titans are a scrappy team, and their defense should relish the challenge in Week 9. The Titans are sneaky with pressure, and generate a fair bit without blitzing – due to a solid defensive line. That should and could frustrate Mahomes when operating from the pocket, and force him into some uncomfortable situations. While Kansas City does help Travis Kelce, their wide receiver play hasn’t been overly impressive to date, and their run game remains a question mark week in, week out. Tennessee has the personnel and pass rush to limit Kansas City’s offense from going up and down.
Chiefs’ QB Patrick Mahomes has won 22 straight games in November and December, the longest win streak by any QB since 1950. The last time Mahomes has lost in either of those months was 2019 — to the Titans team he faces today.

Chiefs vs. Titans Trends To Know:
Titans are 5-0 ATS in their last 5 games overall.
Titans are 4-0 ATS in their last 4 games following a ATS win.
Titans are 6-1-1 ATS in their last 8 games following a bye week.
Titans are 3-1-1 ATS in their last 5 games in Week 9.
Titans are 12-4 ATS in their last 16 road games vs. a team with a winning home record.
Chiefs are 0-4 ATS in their last 4 home games.
Chiefs are 0-5 ATS in their last 5 vs. AFC.
Titans are 5-2 ATS in their last 7 meetings in Kansas City.
Titans are 5-1 ATS in their last 6 meetings.
The Titans have dominated this series of late, and though they enter as heavy road underdogs, the banged-up Chiefs haven’t fared well on home soil against the spread this season. Kansas City routinely has a knack of playing down to its competition, and Week 9’s Sunday Night Football showdown looks to be yet another example. Malik Willis is raw and unproven, but has natural talent that can frustrate and evade defenses. The Tennessee stop unit has frustrated Mahomes before, and should be able to keep pace. This number is too large.
