The Hurricanes swept both the Ottawa Senators and Philadelphia Flyers, becoming the first team in Stanley Cup Playoff history to win their first eight games, and they’ve done it in convincing fashion.

In thrilling fashion, the Montreal Canadiens have punched their ticket to the Eastern Conference Final. While the Carolina Hurricanes have been resting after a sweep of the Flyers, Montreal had to grind all the way to overtime in Game 7 to get here.
There’s no time to relax. Game 1 of the ECF is Thursday night, and the Canadiens will hit the ice with plenty of mileage already on the odometer. They also went seven games against the Tampa Bay Lightning, meaning they’ve now played 14 games since beating Tampa in OT back on April 19.

The good news for Montreal is that their core is built to handle this kind of schedule. The Canadiens own the second-youngest roster in the NHL, with an average age of just 25.61. That youth should help them manage the quick turnaround better than most, even if an extra day or two of rest would’ve been better after such an emotional overtime win.
So far, the Canadiens have thrived in the biggest moments. They’ve delivered in tight games against two quality opponents, including a Lightning team that entered the playoffs with the second-best odds to win the Stanley Cup. Offensively, Montreal has produced 3.07 goals per game, ranking seventh in the postseason.
No Hab has been more clutch than Alex Newhook. He delivered the overtime winner for his seventh goal of the playoffs and caught fire with four goals in his last five games. The Canadiens’ depth has also shone through, with four different players sitting at four goals this postseason.
If Montreal is going to solve Carolina, though, Jakub Dobes will have to be the difference-maker. The Canadiens netminder comes into the series with a 2.52 GAA and a .910 save percentage. He’s made timely stops, but he may need to elevate his game even further if Montreal is going to steal at least one in Raleigh.
Carolina’s size and physicality are going to be a real test, especially early in the series. That’s where Dobes has to be lights out. If he’s not, the Canadiens’ run may not be long for this round, and their dream of advancing could fade quickly.

When you combine that with a physical, structured blue line and depth across all four forward lines, the Hurricanes have all the ingredients of a legitimate Stanley Cup contender. That should make it difficult on a tired Canadiens team to overcome.
