2023 WWE Payback Odds, Predictions and Rumors

WWE Payback

On Saturday, September 2nd, the WWE will be live from the PPG Paints Arena in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, for their Payback event. This is the seventh installment of the Payback PPV franchise. As usual, this WWE show will stream live on Peacock in the United States.

As of this writing, there are six matches listed for Payback. However, keep an eye out this week for additional bouts.

WWE betting sites have released odds for most of the confirmed Payback lineup. Let’s take a look at the available Payback betting odds, the latest WWE rumors, and make our predictions. Odds are courtesy of BetOnline.

Steel Cage Match

BETOdds
Becky Lynch-1000
Trish Stratus+500

The feud between these two women has lasted for quite some time. However, the WWE has done a good enough job keeping the interest alive with this storyline. The addition of Zoey Stark has also helped keep the momentum going through multiple PPVs and all the way to Payback.

Due to the constant interference and double countouts, the WWE brass decided to have these two stars settle their feud in a steel-cage match. Typically, a steel cage match symbolizes the end of a storyline. It’s a way for two wrestlers to settle their grudge. I see that being the case for this bout.

You can expect Becky Lynch to get her payback this weekend as she has come up short against Trish Stratus in this feud. On a side note, there’s a rumor going around that Stratus could be taking time off until the 2024 Royal Rumble or WrestleMania 40 next year. Take that rumor for what it’s worth.

With that said, sports betting sites are heavily leaning towards Lynch and so am I. Take “The Man” to win this physical encounter on Saturday night.

BETOdds
LA Knight-5000
The Miz+1000

LA Knight is a massive betting favorite at entertainment betting sites. And, there’s no reason to think he won’t win. Knight is on a trajectory that will take him to the world title sooner than later. In fact, u can book him to be world champ after next year’s WrestleMania.

Knight is extremely over with the WWE Universe, can cut a great promo, and has strong in-ring skills that help him to stand out from the rest of the WWE roster.

This weekend’s bout with The Miz is nothing more than a glorified squash match. Sure, the WWE can swerve us and have Miz win via countout, but that’s just lazy booking. The fans want to see Knight win in convincing fashion. And, he will.

However, when it comes to betting on Payback, skip this match. This is because there’s always a chance that the WWE could have a wonky finish. -5000 odds are just not worth the risk.

Steel City Street Fight for Undisputed Tag Team Championship

(c)Kevin Owens & Sami Zayn-1000
The Judgment Day+500

This feud began in mid-July and could continue for another PPV or so. It all depends on how the WWE books the finish. Tensions within The Judgment Day are growing and there could be an implosion if they don’t win the tag titles this weekend.

Champions Kevin Owens and Sami Zayn have been banged up and coming back from injuries. So, there could be a reason to take the titles off the champs for the near future.

Zayn and Owens have held the belts since WrestleMania 39 in April, and have been in continuous feuds since then. With a Street Fight stipulation, anything can happen. I expect some outside interference to dictate the outcome of this match.

There’s some buzz growing that Priest could be on his way out of The Judgment Day. Between the odds and the rumor of Priest’s departure from his faction, take Owens and Zayn to retain their titles.

WWE United States Championship Match

BETOdds
(c) Rey Mysterio-500
Austin Theory+300

Why should we even care about this match? The WWE has done such an awful job with booking Austin Theory as of late, that he has become someone that most fans don’t even care about anymore.

This feud has been thrown together rather quickly. First, it was Latino World Order’s Santos Escobar set to face Theory in a title match at the August 11th episode of Smackdown, but Escobar was injured by Theory before the bout even started.

Rey Mysterio was allowed to replace LWO teammate Escobar for the title bout, which Mysterio would go on to win. Theory demanded a rematch against Mysterio, but the WWE put him in a number-one contender’s match instead. Theory ended up winning this bout on the August 18th episode of Smackdown.

Eventually, Mysterio and Theory were booked to wrestle at Payback for the US Championship. Oddsmakers feel that Mysterio will remain the champ. However, Mysterio has the lowest odds out of all the individual champions on the card.

With that said, the LWO seems to be garnering enough attention from fans that I don’t believe the WWE creative team will have Mysterio lose this weekend. Of all the announced matches for Payback, this is the least interesting one. So, use this as an opportunity for a bathroom break if you aren’t wagering on it.

WWE Women’s World Championship Match

BETOdds
(c) Rhea Ripley-5000
Raquel Rodriguez+1000

Is there a more “over” star in the WWE than Rhea Ripley? Sure, there are other wrestlers on her level, but none more popular with the fans and pundits.

Ripley is the face of women’s wrestling in the WWE and she has kept fans captivated for over the last year. Her pairing with Dominik Mysterio has been some of the best WWE television throughout 2023. This duo is one of the only reasons that I tune into WWE programming.

The feud between these two ladies stems back a few months when Raquel Rodriguez took issue with Ripley’s assault on Natalya during the June 19th episode of RAW.

From that point, there have been many twists and turns between the two stars that included Ripley injuring Rodriguez’s knee on a July 17th episode of RAW. Ripley would also go on to attack Rodriguez’s tag team partner, Liv Morgan, which cost the duo their tag team titles.

Eventually, Rodriguez would return from multiple injuries at the hands of Ripley, and assault the women’s champion on the August 21st episode of RAW. She would then challenge Ripley to a title match at Payback, which was approved by WWE official Adam Pearce.

Unfortunately for fans of Rodriguez, there’s no way that Ripley is losing the title on Saturday. “Mami” will continue a long reign until there is a credible opponent to give the rub and title to. Like with LA Knight, there is no reason to risk a wager on -5000 odds. Instead, just enjoy the match.

WWE World Heavyweight Championship Match

BETOdds
(c) Seth Rollins-1000
Shinsuke Nakamura+500

It’s hard to believe that Shinsuke Nakamura is still in the WWE after all of his ebbs and flows with creative storylines. Depending on which year it is, Nakamura is either a top contender or an afterthought. So, to give Seth Rollins a challenger for a forgetful PPV, the WWE decided to call Nakamura.

On the August 7th episode of RAW, Nakamura attacked Rollins from behind after successfully winning a six-man tag match with Rollins as one of his partners. The next week, he would attack Rollins again after both men agreed to a world title match. All of this eventually led to the official booking of this world title bout at Payback.

It’s hard to imagine a scenario where Nakamura wins this title, despite my wishes that he would. In fact, I had hoped he would’ve left WWE by now and jumped ship to AEW. Unfortunately, that never happened. Instead, we might see Edge leave WWE for AEW as rumors are swirling over his departure.

As for this bout, Rollins will win and continue carrying “the red show” for the next few months as the world champ. However, I do expect a great in-ring matchup between these two highly-talented wrestlers.
