He and WR Bryce Lance formed a formidable duo. He has been a challenge for defenses all season, catching 50 passes for 1,001 yards and seven touchdowns. With a less dominant defense, NDSU’s offense could have even surpassed 474.1 yards per game.
North Dakota State’s defense leads the nation, allowing just 237.6 yards per game. They routinely give Payton excellent field position, rarely requiring long drives to score.
Allowing just 140 passing and under 100 rushing yards per game, NDSU’s defense is built to shut teams down. They also lead the FCS in points allowed at 11.67 per game.
After a 12-0 regular season and complete dominance, the Bison are clear frontrunners for the FCS title.
Montana State Bobcats (+575)
Perhaps the only team with a legitimate chance of upsetting North Dakota is the Montana State Bobcats. Although Montana State wasn’t perfect at 10-2 during the regular season, they looked like contenders most of the year.
Entering the tournament on a 10-game winning streak, the Bobcats haven’t lost since a 30-24 overtime defeat back in September against South Dakota State. They suffered a tough season opener, losing 59-13 to the Oregon Ducks, and then a letdown the following week. Other than that, Montana State played almost flawless football.
If Montana State hadn’t faced Oregon in Week 1, there’s a good chance they would have finished 12-0 in the Big Sky. I feel confident that the Bobcats are the team most capable of defeating North Dakota State, thanks largely to QB Justin Lamson, one of the most efficient quarterbacks in the FCS.

This season, Lamson threw for 2,345 yards, 20 touchdowns, and just two interceptions. He’s quick with his decisions and rarely makes mistakes. As a dangerous dual-threat quarterback, he also rushed for 589 yards and 11 touchdowns.
Lamson led a Bobcat offense that averaged 38.2 points and 444.1 yards per game, proof of their potent attack. Alongside Lamson, RB Julius Davis provided a strong running game, amassing 885 yards with an impressive 7.3 yards per carry.
The Bobcats’ defense was stout too, allowing just 312.9 yards per game (14th in the FCS), and were especially tough against the run, limiting opponents to 116.4 yards per game. With strong run stoppers, Montana State is well-equipped to challenge North Dakota State.

Anything could happen, including a potential injury to Payton. If the quarterbacks gets hurt, then all bets are off and the door is going to be open, especially for Montana State. The Bobcats might be able to get it done even if Payton is healthy.
As I noted, Montana State is likely perfect as well without Oregon on their schedule to open the season. They were completely unprepared for South Dakota State after having the Ducks a week earlier. Since then, Montana State has rolled on a 10-game winning streak.
There is value to be had on Lawson and the Bobcats at +575 odds. That’s a huge price on a terrific football team. In short, consider backing Montana State to win the FCS Championship.
