Snooker World Championship 2024 Top Contenders

Three clear favorites lead the field into Sheffield this year. Snooker fans likely won’t be surprised that O’Sullivan, Trump, and Mark Selby are the most likely winners.

Let’s analyze each star’s chances before I share my Snooker World Championship 2024 best bet.

Ronnie O’Sullivan (+250)

O’Sullivan is no stranger to winning the biggest tournaments in snooker. The top-ranked player has a combined collection of 23 Triple Crown tournaments.

In addition to seven World Championship titles, O’Sullivan has captured eight UK Championships and eight Masters crowns!

The 48-year-old hasn’t slowed down even a little bit this season. In fact, after failing to win a Triple Crown in the 2022-23 campaign, O’Sullivan is on a redemption tour with wins in the UK Championship and the Masters.

“The Rocket” is in a strong position to win all three Triple Crown events in the same season for the first time in a career that dates back to the early 1990s.

Since Jan. 8, O’Sullivan has maintained impeccable form. In his previous 26 matches, O’Sullivan has a win rate of 85% with a 22-4 record. This run includes titles at the Masters, World Grand Prix, and World Masters of Snooker.

In his latest effort, O’Sullivan blitzed Ali Carter for an incredible 10-2 win at the Tour Championship on April 31. The ageless wonder’s form is untouchable right now and he loves the long format in Crucible.

Judd Trump (+350)

Trump finally earned a World Championship title in the 2018-19 season. After years of heartbreak and frustration, the 34-year-old joined an illustrious list of World Championship winners.

Well done by Trump, but he’s only won one Triple Crown event since the best year of his career in 2018-19. As well as the World Championship, Trump took the Masters title that season.

Last year, Trump ended the drought with the second Masters title of his career. The knack on him has always been his mindset in big tournaments. He has the talent to have more than four major titles on his resume as a 34-year-old.

However, inconsistent form has repeatedly doomed him in these big-time events. Trump is probably the closest thing we have to The Rocket in terms of raw talent but lacks his composure under pressure.

Nevertheless, Trump has had some big wins in 2024, including a German Masters title and most recently, the World Open on March 24. He is 20-3 in singles matches since Jan. 15, but two of his losses were versus O’Sullivan2.

Mark Selby (+600)

“The Jester from Leicester” has saved some of the best efforts of his career for the Crucible. Selby won his first World Championship title in 2013-14 and has won another three since.

The four-time champion most recently surged to a win at the World Championship in 2021. Selby’s mental approach is the perfect recipe for having success in such a grueling event. Unlike Trump, Selby is not bothered by the pressure of lengthy matches, in fact, he loves the spotlight.

Some fans find Selby’s playing style is too slow, as he prefers to grind the match right down to a halt. It doesn’t make for riveting TV, but this strategy can be successful in a long format like the World Championship.

He’s still favored in the 2024 Snooker World Championship odds because of his elite mentality, but recent form suggests Selby needs to improve significantly to challenge for the title.

The 40-year-old Englishman owns a record of 8-4 in his previous 12 singles matches. In his latest assignment, Selby came up short in an opening-round 10-8 loss to Gary Wilson at the Tour Championship3.

As much as Selby likes the format for the World Championship at the Crucible, he needs to focus before April 20 arrives. In his current form, it’s hard to recommend him as one of my 2024 Snooker World Championship best bets.

Dark Horses for the Snooker World Championship 2024

Prior to looking at our top selection, let’s delve into the best 2024 Snooker World Championships picks for the dark horses of the event. Adding a few long shots to your card is recommended for the final leg of the Triple Crown:

  1. The defending World Championship winner at +1600? Those aren’t the worst odds on the board. He’s posted some commendable wins this season, including over Mark Allen and Neil Robertson.

  2. The No. 7 player in the world isn’t scared to go after the best players on the Tour. Junhui could have a chance if he could find a way to avoid O’Sullivan’s iron grip.

At the latest UK Championship, Junghui won his first four matches before falling to O’Sullivan. “The Rocket” ended Junghui’s tournament at the World Grand Prix, as well.

  3. Kyren Williams’ recent form holds up fairly well. He’s won five of his last seven matches, with losses only against John Higgins and Trump since March 13. If some of the top favorites fall in upsets, Williams could be there to clean up the mess at the Crucible.

Snooker World Championship 2024 Prediction and Betting Pick

O’Sullivan is winning whenever he wants to this season. If he wakes up and the drive is there, The Rocket is not going to be denied against any opponent.

There is only one accomplishment that O’Sullivan hasn’t achieved yet in his Hall of Fame career. He’s won all three Triple Crown events multiple times but has never won them all in the same campaign.

Do you believe he will wake up on April 20 with a relentless desire to win the 2024 World Championship? You never know with Ronnie, but I’m not betting against him.

Based on his incredible recent form, O’Sullivan is the one to beat at the Crucible. There is value in the +250 price, as he should be in the +175 to +150 range, based on current form alone.
