With three gold medals since Salt Lake City 2002, Canada has had the clear advantage over the USA at the Winter Games. They are also winners of the last gold medal from when NHL players participated at Sochi 2014.

The difference between the USA and Canada has been razor-thin, with Sidney Crosby’s Golden Goal in 2010 the most memorable moment of the rivalry. Crosby’s status for the gold medal matchup is up in the air, as he continues to deal with a lower-body injury suffered against Czechia in the quarterfinals.

With a perfect record heading into the finals in Milan, let’s break down Canada’s roster:

Offense

Despite the injury concerns surrounding Sidney Crosby, Team Canada remains stacked offensively. It will certainly hurt if Crosby can’t suit up, but there’s no shortage of firepower on this roster.

Even without Crosby in the lineup, Canada is built to score. The top line of Connor McDavid and Macklin Celebrini features two of the most dangerous playmakers in the league. Celebrini has exploded this season and has played his way into the Hart Trophy conversation.

With McDavid and Celebrini, Canada has two of the top five scorers in the NHL on the same line. The 29-year-old Oiler led the league at the halfway mark with 96 points, while Celebrini sat fourth with 81 points.

Canada’s second line doesn’t offer any relief, either. Behind McDavid, fellow Nova Scotian Nathan MacKinnon ranks second in league scoring with 93 points. By contrast, Team USA doesn’t have a single player in the top five in points on its roster.

Canada’s edge extends beyond its stars. A third line built around Mitch Marner and Nick Suzuki provides plenty of offensive upside, and a fourth line featuring Brad Marchand and Sam Bennett adds a level of physicality the Americans can’t match.

Crosby’s injury is far from good news for Team Canada, but this roster remains more than capable of driving the offense against any opponent.

Defense

Team Canada’s identity is with their unbelievable playmaking ability from McDavid and MacKinnon. However, their physical defense has often been the catalyst for their multiple gold medals over the years.

Even though goaltending issues have been at the top of concerns for Canadian fans, the defense has had a knack for stepping up at the right time. Led by two-way defenseman Cale Makar, they are fantastic puck movers and excellent at clogging passing lanes.

Canada’s top defensive pairing of Colorado teammates Makar and Devon Toews provides a strong mix of experience and elite hockey IQ. Both are capable of playing sound defense or joining the rush to support Canada’s high-end forwards. While some questioned Drew Doughty’s inclusion, he offers exactly what’s needed in a game of this magnitude: veteran poise and big-game experience.

Doughty has been through it all, from major international tournaments to Stanley Cup Finals, and that history could be pivotal in a gold medal game. Look for him to take on critical minutes in the biggest spots for Team Canada.

In net, Canada has rotated between Jordan Binnington and Logan Thompson, but has leaned on Binnington in the knockout stage. After starring for Canada at the 4 Nations, he’s earned Cooper’s trust as the go-to option. Though he’s had ups and downs with the St. Louis Blues, Binnington seems to find another level in a Team Canada sweater.

At the Winter Games in Milano, Binnington has recorded a 1.74 GAA and a .914 save percentage through four games. He’s poised to stand tall again and deliver key saves when the pressure is at its peak.

Team USA hasn’t captured Olympic gold since the legendary “Miracle on Ice” in 1980. They’ve been in the mix ever since, most notably reaching the gold medal game on home ice in Salt Lake City in 2002, but they still haven’t managed to take that final step.

In 2010, Crosby shattered American hopes with his iconic Golden Goal in overtime in Vancouver. Last year brought more heartbreak, as Canada once again prevailed in OT to claim the 4 Nations title in a game that truly could have gone either way.

So, is this finally the year Team USA breaks through and brings home gold? Let’s dig into the details:

Offense

The Americans may not match the Canadians’ depth offensively, but they are certainly capable of scoring the puck. The top line with Matthew Tkachuk, Brady Tkachuk, and Jack Eichel has a plethora of chemistry for Team USA.

However, the best player for the American side, a player who is constantly criticized in big games, is Toronto Maple Leafs’ center Auston Matthews. Matthews has scored three goals, while dishing out three assists for six points in five games.

That’s precisely the difference the USA needs. When Matthews disappears, as he has in past clutch games, whether with the national team or the Leafs, his team tends to lose. He isn’t out of the woods yet, but the early signs in this tournament are promising.

Note that Eichel is the only American currently in the NHL’s top 10 in scoring. After Eichel at ninth, the next closest American is Jason Robertson, who sits 11th with 66 points. Robertson was controversially left off the roster, though, so he doesn’t factor into this discussion.

Through the preliminaries, the USA ranked second in goals scored with 16, while Canada held a four-goal edge with 20 heading into the knockouts. The bottom lines with J.T. Miller, Brock Nelson, and Vincent Trocheck are where Canada might have a slight advantage, but the margin for error is miniscule.

Defense

Team USA has two of the best defensemen in the NHL on their roster. With Hughes and Zach Werenski on the same team, there is plenty of ammunition for this team.

Hughes is a former Jack Norris winner, and Werenski is in a duel with Makar for the trophy this season. Canada’s defense has strong depth, but the combo of Hughes and Werenski is on another level.

The U.S. entered this season expecting a major edge in goal. Connor Hellebuyck was coming off a memorable campaign in which he captured both the Hart and Vezina Trophies.

However, Hellebuyck has looked vulnerable in Winnipeg in 2025-26, posting a modest 2.79 GAA and .900 save percentage over 36 games. He’s been locked in at the Olympics, though. The 32-year-old owns a 1.23 GAA and .947 save percentage through four games.

The question is whether that form will hold against a Canadian team with far more playmaking and firepower than any opponent the U.S. has faced so far. The version of Hellebuyck that shows up could ultimately decide this matchup.
