The Hanwha Eagles look like a strong play to open the 2026 KBO season, holding clear advantages on both sides of the ball against a Kiwoom squad that was abysmal last year and should continue to struggle. Hanwha enters the year as a legitimate contender and should set the tone early at home.
Wilkel Hernandez gets the start for the Eagles after a solid showing overseas. While his 4.80 ERA in Triple-A doesn’t jump off the page, he flashed upside in the Venezuelan Winter League with a 2.45 ERA and 1.09 WHIP. Against weaker KBO competition, he projects to be a reliable mid-rotation arm capable of limiting damage. Hernandez was sharp in his exhibition tune-up, with one hit across three frames.

Kiwoom, on the other hand, was the worst team in the KBO last season, finishing 47-93. They ranked last in both scoring (4.03 runs per game) and pitching, posting an ugly 5.97 team ERA. Even with Raul Alcantara on the mound, the lack of bullpen support and weak offense remains a major concern.
Hanwha’s offense, which ranked fourth in scoring, should capitalize on those weaknesses. With the more complete roster and better momentum entering 2026, the Eagles provide solid value at this price.
Lotte Giants vs. Samsung Lions: Lions (-120)
The Samsung Lions are in a strong position to open the KBO season with a win, backed by a clear edge on the mound. They turn to ace Ariel Jurado, who has been one of the more reliable foreign arms in the league.
Jurado posted an excellent 2.60 ERA and 1.08 WHIP last season, consistently limiting base runners and working deep into games. His track record in Korea is proven as well, logging a 2.65 and 3.36 ERA in previous seasons, showing both consistency and durability. He is coming off a solid performance in the WBC for Panama, with a 0.00 ERA and three hits through five innings.

Lotte counters with Elvin Rodriguez, who enters his first KBO season with major question marks. The right-hander struggled badly in MLB action last year, posting a 9.15 ERA and 1.68 WHIP across limited appearances with Baltimore and Milwaukee. While he was mostly used out of the bullpen, transitioning into a starting role in a new league adds another layer of uncertainty.
