For the first time since 2022, a team other than the Kansas City Chiefs will win the Super Bowl coin toss. The Chiefs won three consecutive coin tosses and four of the last five since 2021! Over the last ten years, tails has won six times to four heads. Also, worth noting, is that the team selection for the coin toss has been tails in four straight years.
Over a decade ago, from 2014 through 2020, tails was the popular call, showing up in six of seven Super Bowls. Since then, the trend has nearly evened out, with three heads and two tails in the last five years. Looking all the way back to Super Bowl I, tails still holds a slight historical edge, coming up 31 times compared to 28 for heads, or 52% in favor of tails.
What’s even more intriguing is what happens after the flip. The team that loses the coin toss has actually gone on to win the Super Bowl more often. Eight of the last ten Super Bowl champions lost the opening toss. Before the Chiefs broke that pattern in 2023, the coin toss winner hadn’t won the Lombardi Trophy since the Seahawks did it in Super Bowl XLVIII back in 2014.

Although “tails never fails” isn’t a sound strategy, it has clearly been the popular choice among teams lately. All four teams since 2022 have called tails, so we can probably expect the same this year. Regardless, I’m fading that selection and taking heads at +100 for my Super Bowl coin toss betting picks.
